ingredients

1 package (15-18 ounce size) yellow cake mix
3 eggs
1 can (16 ounce size) applesauce

directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a tube or Bundt pan.

Combine the yellow cake mix and eggs in a mixing bowl. Beat on low speed with an electric mixer for 1-2 minutes or until smooth. Stir in the applesauce.

Pour the cake batter into the prepared baking pan.

Place the cake in the oven and bake at 350 degrees F for 30-40 minutes or until done.

Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Invert the pan onto a platter and remove the cake from the pan. Let cool completely. Dust the applesauce cake with cinnamon sugar if desired.

recipe tips

Mix in a teaspoon of vanilla extract or cinnamon into the batter for added flavor.

To prevent the cake from sticking, dust the greased pan with flour or use a non-stick baking spray.

For a healthier version, use an unsweetened applesauce and a low-sugar cake mix.

If the cake is browning too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil during the last 10-15 minutes of baking.

Test the cake for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out clean.

Let the cake cool completely before slicing to prevent it from falling apart.

Garnish with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of caramel sauce for a sweet topping.

Serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Try adding chopped nuts or raisins to the batter.

Always preheat the oven for the best baking results.

common recipe questions

Can I use a different flavor of cake mix?

Yes, spice cake mix or white cake mix can also be used for slightly different flavors.

What can I use instead of eggs?

For an egg-free version, you can use a commercial egg replacer or a mixture of flaxseed meal and water. It may change the texture of the cake, however.

Is there a substitute for canned applesauce?

Homemade applesauce can be used, or you can substitute with mashed bananas for a different flavor.

How do I store and keep the cake?

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for longer storage.

Can this cake be frozen?

Yes, it can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

tools needed

Mixing Bowl: To combine the cake mix and eggs to create the batter for the cake. Make sure the bowl is large enough to hold all ingredients and allow for mixing without spilling or splattering.

Electric Mixer: For beating the cake mix and eggs together. A hand mixer or stand mixer can be used for this step.

Tube or Bundt Pan: For baking the cake in the classic ring shape. Make sure to grease the pan thoroughly to prevent sticking.

Platter: For inverting the cake onto after it has finished baking and cooling sufficiently in the pan. Choose a platter that is large enough to hold and display the cake.

Cooling Rack (optional): Placing the Bundt cake on a cooling rack after removing it from the pan can help it cool evenly. The rack allows air to circulate around the cake, promoting even cooling.

what goes with it?

Caramel Sauce: Drizzle some rich caramel sauce over a slice of this cake for a decadent treat. The smooth, buttery caramel will add an extra layer of sweetness to the already delicious cake.

Vanilla Ice Cream: Serve a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream alongside a slice of this cake for a classic dessert combo.

Cinnamon Whipped Cream: Top this cake with a dollop of cinnamon whipped cream for a flavor twist. The warm, spicy notes of the cinnamon in the whipped cream will enhance the cinnamon sugar dusting on the cake.

Warm Apple Compote: serve a spoonful of warm apple compote alongside a slice of this applesauce cake. The stewed apples will complement the apple flavor in the cake.

Very happy to come across a quick and easy recipe that does what it says. Did extra work using a bullet blender on apples that were about to be thrown out. And I added vanilla and apple pie spices. Also my yellow cake mix was zero sugar. The next time I use this recipe it will be to make a layer cake or cupcakes because my cake was very moist, light and fluffy in texture.

  3. Kat REVIEW:

Used spice cake instead of yellow. We loved eating it while warm with a sugar glaze since I used unsweetened applesauce.

Can I use canned pumpkin instead of the applesauce?

    • We haven't tested the recipe that way but it would be worth trying. Note that canned pumpkin is usually more dense than applesauce so you may need to add some liquid. Let us know if you try it!

Using a bunt pan grease well . Mix I/4 cup of sugar with 2 teaspoons of cinnamon. Pour on bottom of pan. Bake as usual. Take out about 3 minutes early. When cake is cool. Turn out. Cake will have a great top full of cinnamon sugar. Beautiful finish.

I was shocked at how simple this recipe was and that it turned out so good! Lower fat too since you're not adding the oil that you usually add with cake mix.

Good for a quick cake. I used egg beaters in place of the real eggs. Next time I make it I will drizzle icing on top after it cools.
