Two kinds of seafood are mixed into this veggie-packed spinach dip. It's not as rich as other spinach dips tend to be so you may want to double the recipe (because everyone will dig in!)

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

2 tablespoons butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 small onion, finely chopped
1/2 green or red bell pepper, finely chopped
1 package (10 ounce size) frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
1 pound cooked crab meat, finely chopped
1/4 pound cooked shrimp, finely chopped
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon Old Bay Seafood seasoning
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

directions

Melt the butter in a deep skillet or saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic, onion, and bell pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until soft.

Add the spinach, crab, shrimp, basil, thyme, Old Bay, salt, pepper, and Parmesan cheese. Mix well. Cook, stirring frequently, until the dip is heated through and the cheese has melted.

Remove the pan from the heat and transfer the dip to a heat-proof serving dish. Serve the crab and shrimp spinach dip with crackers.

recipe tips

Try different seafood combinations like lobster or scallops for variety.

To amp up the flavor, consider adding a dash of Worcestershire sauce or hot sauce to the mixture.

Use cooked salad-sized shrimp to save time instead of chopping larger shrimp.

common recipe questions

What is Old Bay Seafood seasoning?

Old Bay Seafood seasoning is a blend of herbs and spices commonly used in seafood dishes, adding a unique flavor with hints of celery salt, paprika, and other seasonings.

Can I use fresh spinach instead of frozen?

Yes, fresh spinach can be used in place of frozen. You'll need one pound of fresh to replace 10 ounces of frozen. Cook it until wilted then drain any liquid well before adding to the recipe.

Can I use imitation crab meat instead of real crab meat?

Yes, imitation crab meat can be used as a more budget-friendly alternative, but the flavor and texture may differ slightly.

How can I make this dip spicier?

To add a spicy kick, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or chopped jalapenos to the mixture.

Can I make this dip in advance?

Yes, this dip can be prepared ahead of time and reheated before serving. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

What kind of crackers are best served with this dip?

Crackers with a sturdy texture like water crackers, pita chips, or baguette slices are ideal for scooping up this creamy dip.

How can I make this dip richer?

To make the dip richer, consider adding a bit of cream cheese or sour cream to the mixture for a creamier texture.

Can I freeze this dip?

While cheesy dips like this one may not freeze well due to potential texture changes, you can freeze the mixture before adding the cheese for later use.

tools needed

Deep Skillet or Saucepan: For cooking the garlic, onion, bell pepper, spinach, crab, and shrimp mixture until heated through and the cheese has melted.

Heat-Proof Serving Dish: To transfer the finished crab and shrimp spinach dip for serving.

Stirring Spoon: Helpful for stirring the ingredients together in the skillet.

what goes with it?

Plain crackers: the simplicity of plain crackers will allow the flavors of the crab, shrimp, and spinach dip to shine through without overpowering them.

Garlic Bread: because who doesn't love garlic with seafood? Plus, that crispy texture of the bread will be a perfect contrast to the creamy dip.

Veggie Platter: balance out the richness of the dip with some fresh veggies. It's like a guilt-free way to enjoy all that cheesy goodness.

Pita Chips: give your taste buds a little Mediterranean vacation with some crunchy pita chips.

beverage pairings

Wine Pairings
Chardonnay: Chardonnay's buttery texture and tropical fruit notes can complement the richness of the seafood in this dip. Look for one with a hint of oak for added depth.

Sauvignon Blanc: If you're more into crisp, refreshing whites, a Sauvignon Blanc with its zesty citrus and herbaceous flavors can balance out the seafood's brininess.

Pinot Grigio: For those who prefer a lighter white wine, a Pinot Grigio with its crisp acidity and subtle fruit notes can provide a clean, refreshing contrast to the savory seafood flavors.

Other Alcohol Pairings
Martini: A classic martini, whether shaken or stirred, can be a sophisticated companion to this upscale seafood spinach dip.

Lager: Keep it simple and refreshing with a lager. The light maltiness and crisp finish can cleanse your palate in between bites of this flavorful seafood dip.

Paloma: The bright, citrusy flavors of a Paloma cocktail can cut through the richness of the seafood while adding a touch of sweetness.

Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Iced Green Tea: If you're looking for a refreshing non-alcoholic option, a glass of iced green tea can provide a light, herbal complement to the seafood dip.

Pineapple Juice: The fruity sweetness of pineapple juice can enhance the natural sweetness of the seafood in the dip while adding a tropical twist.

Mint Lemonade: A mint-infused lemonade can offer a zesty, refreshing kick that pairs well with the seafood and the savory herbs in the dip.
