ingredients

1 container (16 ounce size) sour cream
1 cup mayonnaise
1 envelope dry vegetable soup mix
1 package (10 ounce size) frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well drained
1 can (8 ounce size) chopped water chestnuts, drained
3 green onions, chopped

directions

Combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, and soup mix in a bowl. Mix well. Stir in the spinach, water chestnuts, and green onions. Cover the bowl and place in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving. Can chill up to 24 hours.

Serve the spinach dip with crackers, bagel chips, or veggie dippers.

recipe tips

Use full-fat sour cream and mayonnaise for a creamier texture.

Finely chop the green onions to evenly distribute their flavor throughout the dip.

Garnish the dip with fresh herbs like parsley or dill.

For a more robust flavor, add a touch of grated Parmesan cheese.

Serve the dip at room temperature if it has been in the refrigerator for a while; this will enhance the flavors.

If the dip seems too thick, stir in a small amount of milk or cream as needed.

Serve the dip in a bread bowl for a fun twist.

common recipe questions

Can I use fresh spinach instead of frozen?

You can use fresh spinach. Blanch 1 pound of fresh spinach in boiling water for a few minutes, then drain and chop it finely. Make sure to squeeze out as much moisture as possible to avoid a watery dip.

What if I can't find vegetable soup mix?

You can use a different soup mix such as onion or a vegetable bouillon powder.

Can this dip be made in advance?

Absolutely. In fact, it's often better when made ahead, as it allows the flavors to meld together. You can prepare it up to 24 hours before serving.

How long can I store leftover spinach dip?

You can store leftover spinach dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days.

Can spinach dip be frozen?

While it's not recommended to freeze spinach dip because the texture may change after thawing due to the sour cream and mayo, if you do freeze it, make sure to double wrap it tightly and consume within 1-2 months. Let it thaw slowly in the fridge and mix well before serving.

Why is draining the spinach and water chestnuts important?

Draining the spinach and water chestnuts is important to prevent the dip from becoming watery.

What can I substitute for mayonnaise?

You can use Greek yogurt or more sour cream in place of mayo.

Can I add other ingredients to the dip?

You can experiment with various add-ins such as garlic, artichokes, cheeses (like cream cheese or feta), or spices (like cayenne pepper or garlic powder).

How do I make the dip spicier?

To add some heat, add a small amount of diced jalapenos, a dash of hot sauce, or a pinch of cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes.

Is it necessary to chill the dip before serving?

Chilling the dip allows the flavors to develop and improves the overall taste and texture.

tools needed

Mixing Bowl: A bowl to combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, and vegetable soup mix, as well as to stir in the spinach, water chestnuts, and green onions.

Measuring Cup: For measurement of the mayonnaise.

Spatula or Large Spoon: For mixing the ingredients together.

Plastic Wrap or Lid: To cover the mixing bowl before placing it in the refrigerator.

Knife and Cutting Board: For chopping the green onions.

what goes with it?

Crackers: A wide variety of savory or herb-flavored crackers add a crunchy texture that complements the creamy spinach dip.

Bagel Chips: The crispness of bagel chips contrasts the dip's consistency while their slight density holds up well under the weight of the dip.

Veggie Dippers: Fresh veggies like carrots, celery, and bell peppers offer a healthy alternative, and their natural sweetness balances the dip's richness.

Pita Chips: These chips have an airy texture and mild flavor that complement the dip nicely without overpowering it.

Crostini: Toasted baguette slices create a crunchy base, adding a rustic flair perfect for gatherings.

Sliced Olives: Adding a small slice of black or green olive on top of the dip offers a briny contrast and complements the spinach.

Feta Cheese Crumbles: Sprinkling feta on top gives a salty, tangy note that contrasts well with the richness of the mayonnaise and sour cream base.

Roasted Garlic: Adding roasted garlic into the dip would provide a rich flavor that pairs well with spinach.

Fresh Herbs: Chopped fresh herbs like dill or parsley sprinkled on top can brighten the dip and add freshness.

A classic spinach dip recipe. Serve in a hollowed out bread bowl.

  2. Guest Foodie REVIEW:

This recipe has been around forever but it's always a hit. I serve it in a bread bowl usually because I think bread dippers go best with it but buttery crackers work well too.

  3. Noel REVIEW:

This is indeed the classic version of spinach dip that we all know and love. I always make it for parties even if I have more "upscale" dips with it because no matter how picky a foodie is they will always eat this. ALWAYS! Plus you can make it ahead of time which is always a plus for parties.

  4. Katie REVIEW:

I always use the Leek Soup mix, people always loved when I make it. I think the leek soup gives it a better flavor than the veggie. You be the judge!

  5. Noemi REVIEW:

This spinach dip is grrreat! I used Liptons Onion soup mix & it worked out nice. I used the food processor to chop the onions & spinach (my 5 y.o. couldn't tell there were onions in it, lol). Overall its a simple & quick recipe to make. My guests absolutely loved it & requested the recipe for it. That's when you know it's good..... Mmmmm!

  9. DK REVIEW:

Love this recipe - I used Hidden Valley Ranch dip mix instead of the vegetable dix mix because I had some on hand. It was great!

  10. Guest Foodie REVIEW:

My favorite recepy. I lost it and am glad to find it again. Great with pumpernikel bread. Hollow out the bread and put the dip in centre, use pieces of bread as dippers and then eat the bowl. Yum! Yum!
