A tasty clone recipe from the famous Mexican-style chicken restaurant chain, El Pollo Loco. It's made with canned black beans, onion, yellow bell pepper, garlic, barbecue sauce, liquid smoke, and chipotle chiles in adobo sauce.
1 1/2 tablespoon bacon grease or oil
1 small onion, diced
1 small yellow bell pepper, seeded and diced
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
2 pounds canned black beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup barbecue sauce
1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke
2 tablespoons canned chipotle chiles in adobo sauce, or more to taste (optional)
Heat the bacon grease in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until the vegetables are soft.
Add the black beans, barbecue sauce, liquid smoke, and chipotle chiles. Mix well. Adjust the heat so the beans are at a low simmer. Let cook for 20-30 minutes, stirring occassionally, or until heated through.

Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.
The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

I'm looking to make this tonight or tomorrow. Does it reAlly require 2 cups of BBQ sauce to 2 lb canned beans? That seems like. Ton of BBQ sauce
I'm not sure where you see 2 cups bbq sauce, it only says 1 cup in the ingredient list.

Have been craving this forever. Was so upset when they changed the beans. I live in CA, so I can get authentic beans all over the place. But it is hard to find this style here, now there are gone. I have not been back to El Pollo Loco since. I made this up using a hickory smoked BBQ sauce, so no liquid smoke. But there was still something missing, so I added 1 Tbs Bourbon. Was still missing something, then added 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce and that did it.

Great recipe, the same taste as I remember El Pollo Loco's having. I used Sweet Baby Ray bbq sauce. Omitted the bell pepper. Substituted chipotle powder and added a little brown sugar to taste.

A delicious, saucy Southwestern side dish. Thank you for the recipe!

I loved everything about this recipe! Delicious with just the right amount of smoke/heat. If you use a smoky barbecue sauce you can probably omit the liquid smoke (unless you want the extra smoky flavor). The directions are a little vague but you want to add the beans and then heat on low to have the flavors meld, don't let it bubble the whole time (or it will most likely get mushy).

LOVE this recipe! Definitely use bacon grease if you can because that adds a ton of flavor. And use a good brand of bbq sauce for best results. I used organic canned black beans because I find they hold their shape better and aren't as mushy as some others.
I really enjoy these beans but after paying $3.79 for a pint, I thought it was time to attempt the recipe. I used fresh black beans, Masterpiece original BBQ sauce which really worked well with the chipotle peppers, and otherwise followed the recipe. Very easy & very close to El Pollo's...

Tastes great! Added grilled boneless, skinless, chicken strips. Didn't have smoke and removed chili's after cooking.

Yummy! I made it with only one tablespoon of canola oil and skipped the liquid smoke and the chiles, and I cooked it for at least 45 minutes at a very low temperature with the lid on. It was really delicious and much lighter than the El Pollo Loco version.

This one is excellent! Be careful on your choice of can of black beans - they aren't all the same. Also, barbeque sauce choice is important too. Especially when combined with the chipotle in adobo. This bowl of beans empties quickly!
