A crispy coating but tender inside, this French toast is the ultimate breakfast.

2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon oil
6 slices bread
Toppings
maple syrup
powdered sugar
honey
jam or jelly
Preheat a griddle or skillet over medium heat.
Beat the eggs in a shallow bowl until uniform in color. Stir in the milk, sugar, and cinnamon.
Add the oil to the griddle.
Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides and letting it just soak up enough of the egg mixture to coat well but not so that it's soggy.
Place the bread on the oiled griddle in an even layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown. Press down lightly while cooking to form a crisp crust.
Serve hot with maple syrup, powdered sugar, honey, or jam as desired.
Let the egg mixture sit for a few minutes before dipping the bread to allow the flavors to meld.
Use day-old bread for better absorption; it holds up better than fresh bread.
Try different spices, such as cardamom or ginger, for other flavors.
For a truly indulgent version, stuff the slices with cream cheese or fruit before cooking.
Serve with a sprinkle of lemon or orange zest to add brightness to the dish.
When serving, garnish with herbs like mint for a fresh touch.
Adjust cooking time based on thickness of the bread and desired crispness, checking regularly.
For an even richer flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of vanilla extract to the egg mixture.
You can use various types of bread such as white, whole wheat, sourdough, brioche, or challah. Thicker slices tend to yield a better texture.
You can use any non-dairy milk such as almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk. Each will add a slight different flavor, so choose one that complements your taste preference.
Oil helps prevent sticking and allows for a crispy texture, but you can absolutely use butter for cooking. Just keep an eye on the heat to prevent the butter from burning.
Avoid soaking the bread for too long in the egg mixture; just dip it until coated. Selecting a thicker bread also helps keep it from getting soggy.
You can prepare the French toast and keep it warm in a low oven (around 200 degrees F) until ready to serve.
You can freeze cooked French toast. Place pieces in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze, then transfer to an airtight container for longer storage. Reheat in a toaster or oven.
Reheat in a toaster, toaster oven, or oven at 350 degrees F until heated through. Avoid using the microwave as it can make the texture soggy.
Feel free to experiment by adding vanilla extract, nutmeg, or even a splash of orange zest to the egg mixture for added flavor.
Skillet or Griddle: For cooking the French toast at medium heat.
Measuring Cups and Spoons: For measuring the ingredients, such as the milk, sugar, cinnamon, and oil.
Shallow Bowl: Used for beating the eggs and mixing them with milk, sugar, and cinnamon to create the egg mixture.
Spatula: For flipping the French toast slices while they cook.
Fruit Compote: This fruit compote adds a sweetness that contrasts beautifully with the rich, eggy French toast.
Cream Cheese Spread: A tangy cream cheese spread, maybe with some citrus zest stirred in, complements the sweetness of the French toast while adding a creamy texture.
Nutella: This chocolate-hazelnut spread brings a decadent and slightly bitter element to the dish, making each bite ultra-indulgent.

Yogurt: A dollop of plain or flavored yogurt adds a creaminess and a tangy note that complements the sweetness of the toast.
Almonds or Pecans: Toasted nuts provide a crunchy texture and nutty flavor, adding depth to each bite of French toast.
Fruit Salad: A light fruit salad on the side brings freshness and acidity to the plate, balancing the richness of the French toast.
Chocolate Sauce: Drizzling warm chocolate sauce over the French toast adds an indulgent flair, making breakfast feel like a treat.
