serves/makes:

ready in:
  2-5 hrs

ingredients

1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
6 tablespoons butter
2 bananas, ripe
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Toppings

chocolate sauce
whipped cream

directions

Prepare a steamer or partially fill (about halfway) a saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Grease a 4 cup pudding mold or four 1-cup molds.

In a food processor, process all ingredients except the chocolate chips and toppings (flour, butter, bananas, sugar, milk, and egg) until smooth. Stir in chocolate chips.

Spoon mixture into mold(s) and cover with a double thickness of foil. Steam for 2 hours, replacing water if needed.

Run a knife around the top of the pudding to loosen it, then invert onto serving dish. Serve hot with warm chocolate sauce and whipped cream.

recipe tips

Make sure the bananas are fully mixed into the other ingredients for a smooth pudding texture.

Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor.

Serve the pudding with a sprinkle of sea salt for a sweet and salty contrast.

Garnish with fresh berries or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Try adding a tablespoon of rum or bourbon to the pudding mixture for an adult version.

common recipe questions

Can I use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour?

You can substitute whole wheat flour for all-purpose flour, but the texture and flavor may be slightly different.

How ripe should the bananas be?

The bananas should be ripe, with brown spots on the skin, for the best flavor and texture in the pudding.

Can I use dark chocolate chips instead of semisweet?

You can use dark chocolate chips instead of semisweet if you prefer a richer chocolate flavor. You can also use milk chocolate chips for a lighter flavor.

Do I have to steam the pudding, or can I bake it?

Steaming the pudding helps to create a moist and tender texture. Baking may result in a drier pudding.

Can I make the pudding ahead of time?

You can make the pudding ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. Reheat before serving with warm chocolate sauce and whipped cream.

Can I add nuts or other mix-ins to the pudding?

You can add chopped nuts, dried fruit, or coconut flakes to the pudding, if desired.

How should I store leftover pudding?

Store leftover pudding in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat before serving.
