Polish Mistakes - CDKitchen.com

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

1 pound ground beef
1 pound sausage
1 teaspoon minced onion
1 pound processed cheese food, cubed
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (or to taste)
1 cocktail rye bread

directions

Preheat the broiler.

Place ground beef, sausage and onion in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until meat is evenly brown and onions are soft. Drain liquid.

Mix in the processed cheese food, oregano and Worcestershire sauce. Stir continuously until the cheese is melted.

If the bread is not presliced, cut it into thin slices. Spoon approximately 1 tablespoon of the mixture onto each slice. Place the slices in a single layer on a baking pan.

Broil the slices 10 minutes, or until the cheese is slightly browned and the bread is toasted.

recipe tips

Use lean ground beef to reduce the amount of fat that needs to be drained. The sausage will add plenty of fat.

Toast the bread slices lightly before adding the meat mixture to keep the bread from getting soggy.

Garnish with chopped parsley or green onions if desired.

common recipe questions

Can I use fresh onion instead of minced onion?

Yes, you can use finely chopped fresh onion as a substitute for minced onion.

Is it necessary to use both ground beef and sausage?

The combination of both meats adds flavor, but you can use just one type if preferred.

Can I substitute the processed cheese with another type of cheese?

Processed cheese melts smoothly, but you can try other meltable cheeses like cheddar or mozzarella.

How do I know when the meat is cooked enough to add cheese?

The meat should be browned with no pink remaining, and the onions should be soft.

Can I prepare the meat mixture ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare it, refrigerate, and reheat it when ready to assemble.

How should I store leftover Polish Mistakes?

They don't really keep well after assembled. The bread will get soggy rather quickly if refrigerated.

Can I freeze the Polish Mistakes?

Yes, they freeze quite well, actually, despite not handling refrigeration well. Freeze after assembled but before broiling. Freeze them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once frozen, store in an airtight container for up to 4 months. Broil from frozen state, until the cheese is browned and the bread is toasted.

Can I use regular bread instead of cocktail rye?

Yes, but the flavor and size will differ. Cut regular bread into smaller pieces if necessary.
