Shake up your evening with our cosmopolitan martini recipe. Vodka meets cranberry and lime for a sip that's equal parts tart and tantalizing.
8 parts vodka (80 proof)
2 parts cranberry juice
2 parts Triple Sec
1 part freshly squeezed lime juice
Chill a martini glass by either placing it in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes or filling it with ice water and letting it sit while you prepare the drink.
Fill a cocktail shaker about half full with ice cubes. Measure and add the vodka, cranberry juice, Triple Sec, and lime juice to the shaker.
Shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds.
Remove the ice water from your chilled martini glass if you used the ice water method to chill it. Strain the cosmopolitan into the glass. Garnish your Cosmopolitan martini with a lime twist or a small lime wedge on the rim of the glass, if desired. Cosmopolitans are best enjoyed fresh, so serve immediately.
Chill the martini glass ahead of time. It provides better flavor and keeps the cocktail chilled longer.
Strain the drink quickly after mixing to avoid ice shards in your martini.
Experiment with the ratios to suit your tastes.
Remember, the key to a great cosmopolitan is the balance of tart and sweet flavors.
Yes, you can use any type of vodka you prefer, including flavored vodkas for a twist on the traditional cocktail.
You can use other orange-flavored liqueurs like Cointreau or Grand Marnier.
Freshly squeezed lime juice gives the best flavor, but you can use bottled lime juice in a pinch.
To make it less strong, increase the proportion of cranberry juice and decrease the vodka.
Cut a thin slice of lime peel and twist it over the drink to release the oils, then drop it in or place it on the rim.
You could combine the vodka, cranberry juice, and triple sec in keep in the refrigerator until ready to mix. Then add the lime juice and shake the cocktail with ice. The lime juice loses its potency over time so it's best to add it right before serving the cocktail.
You can use cranberry juice cocktail, but it may be sweeter than pure cranberry juice. You could use another juice but that will drastically change the drink, of course.
Traditionally, cosmopolitans are served straight up, but you can serve it over ice if preferred.
