1/2 cup powdered skim milk
1 teaspoon garlic powder

flavoring: Meat drippings, broth or water from canned tuna (enough to make a stiff dough)

directions

Combine flour, powdered milk and garlic powder in a medium sized bowl. Add beaten egg, flavoring and mix well with hands. Dough should be very stiff. If necessary add more flavoring. 2. Jen REVIEW:

I've got four bichon frises and they LOVE these cookies! They know them so well that when they see me get out the doggie cookie cutters they know I'm baking for them! I use leftover meat juices or broth from any cooking I've done the day before but I've also just used broth from a can when I didn't have anything else available. I'm curious if anyone has tried making these with rice flour instead of wheat? I'd like to eliminate wheat from their diets or at least reduce it but they love these cookies so much. They only get 2 each per day (bedtime snacks and when I leave for work) but I'd still like to see if I can use something healthier in place of the wheat flour.

My two labs LOVED these! I made a roast last night and had drippings in the pan but no use for them as we didn't have gravy with the meal. Looked up this recipe and made the cookies this morning. You would have thought I was giving the dogs a tbone steak by how they gobbled them up!

When making homemade cat food please do your own research on the ingredients. I have spent the morning looking at recipes and checking ingredients. ALl milk products are bad for cats try KMR milk substitute instead. Garlic and onions are toxic to cats and dogs. Wheat products are bad for animals- try rice or barley flour, ground oats, brown rice etc. Limit bad fats just like for us. Avacado oil is actually good for them - I checked. Yeast I found out is bad for cats. Good luck and please do your own research and do not depend on anyone elses advice.

  5. Ema REVIEW:

I have a dog and 3 cats. The dog is very picky and 1 of the cats is pretty picky, so I thought I would give this a go. I made a few small changes to great success. Firstly, I did omit the garlic. I'm a veterinary nurse and it is thought in the vet world that garlic may be harmful to pets. Plus, I don't think the cats would go for garlic, anyway. For the flavoring, I used a bit of vegemite mixed with some water. I went with Vegemite because my cats and my dog all attack me to get a nibble when I'm having my vegemite toast for breakfast (former ex-pat in Australia here). You could also use Marmite for the same effect -- animals seem to love anything in the 'mite family. I also put in a bit of nutritional yeast because it tastes very cheesy (like parmesean) and is healthy. My animals went bonkers for these, inluding my picky eaters! P.S. -- If you're in the US, you can find vegemite or Marmite at Cost Plus World Market. Yum!! :) And another tip -- if you have trouble getting meds into your dog/cat, the vegemite/marmite is good for this, too. They love it and it's sticky, so coats the pill well.

Wow, my cats loved these! All cats are so different, I guess recipes are hit or miss with each individual.

Cat showed no interest, wouldn't even try it. We tried it, and it was very bland.

  8. milindoe REVIEW:

Three cats, no interest whatsoever in these items, made exactly to recipe specifications. Actually, that's not exactly true -- they had a ball batting them around on the floor. But they couldn't have cared less about eating them. What a waste.

I'm interested om switching entirely to home made food for my pets (2 dogs, 4 cats). I cook for them now, but only add it to their dry food. I would like to know how to determine how much of the cooked food to feed to compensate for the dry food. Also I have a chow that is extremely overweight 105 lbs. We are in the process of trying to get the weight off. Is home made food fatening?
