ingredients

3 pounds pork back ribs
1 small onion, diced
4 cloves garlic, chopped
6 green chiles, seeded and chopped
1 lime
1 teaspoon Chinese 5-spice powder (or more to taste)
1 1/2 cup barbecue sauce

directions

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. Line a roasting pan with aluminum foil.

Using a table knife, carefully remove the silver skin from the back of the ribs. Place the ribs in the roasting pan, bone-side down. Sprinkle the ribs with the chopped onion, garlic, and chiles. Squeeze the lime juice over the ribs and then sprinkle the 5-spice powder over all.

Cover the roasting pan with foil so a tight seal is formed. Place the pan in the oven and roast at 250 degrees F for 3-4 hours or until the meat is almost falling off the bones.

Carefully turn the ribs over and place meat-side down. Brush the ribs with some of the barbecue sauce.

Turn the oven to broil.

Place the ribs back in the oven and broil for 5 minutes or until the barbecue sauce starts to caramelize. Turn the ribs over and brush with more barbecue sauce. Return the ribs to the broiler and cook for 5 more minutes for the sauce to caramelize. You can repeat this process if desired for more glazed ribs.

Serve the ribs immediately with additional barbecue sauce, if desired.

At first I thought the combination of ingredients sounded a bit odd - green chiles and 5-spice powder? But it actually was really delicious and the ribs were very tender. I'll make this again definitely

The pre-bake with the onions, garlic and chiles was good - it steamed the ribs and set up a nice flavor base. Next time I will cut back on the Five-Spice, as it was a bit too pronounced (some brands are stronger than others). I will also pull the ribs and broil a little sooner, as I prefer a bit more "tooth" and not so much "falling apart" texture. I used Stubb's Barbecue Sauce to baste and broil.

i made this recipe last night for dinner..ive never made ribs before always scared they wouldnt come out rights. i took the chance and they came out perfect! i diced up the jalapenos, onions, fresh garlic and mixed it with the juice from half a lime..i added the pepper to the mixture and spread it on the meat as directed. it was in the oven for 3 1/2 hours and then i broiled it with the bbq sauce..they were wonderful..they went so quick i didnt even get a chance to take a picture..now i just need a recipe for homemade bbq sauce, thatll top it off!
