A sensational Szechuan sauce that will make you skip store bought for good. Sesame oil, ginger, and star anise give this sauce its authentic kick. Use it for a beef or shrimp stir fry.
1 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
1/2 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/2 cup chicken broth
2 whole anise stars
1 1/2 teaspoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon hoisin sauce
1/8 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/8 teaspoon five-spice powder
2 teaspoons cornstarch dissolved in
1 tablespoon water
Heat the oil in a small saucepan. Add the ginger and garlic and saute 1 minute until softened but not browned.
In a bowl combine the remaining except for the cornstarch mixture. Add them to the saucepan and bring to a simmer, covered, for 10 minutes. Remove star anise.
Whisk in the cornstarch mixture and let boil 1-2 minutes. Taste and add more Tabasco if desired.

My boyfriend wanted me to make szechuan sauce and I haven't had it in so long I wasn't even sure what it was supposed to taste like. He loved it! He said it was better than what you get at most chinese places. I also loved it! will make it again...and again!

Just finished making this and it tastes amazing. Far far better than any shop sauce that can be bought. I also made the Hoisin recipe (also on this site) to put in this. I have jarred it up and will be using it in a Mixed seafood with Szechuan sauce and noodles meal. I will never by shop bought ever again. Thank you so much for the recipe. If I could give more than 5/5 I would.
