recipe tips

Use room temperature butter for easier mixing with the cake mix.

Experiment with different nuts like almonds or pecans for varied flavor.

Add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg to the cake mix to boost the overall flavor.

Make sure to cover the slow cooker snuggly to retain moisture.

Serve immediately after cooking for the best texture.

Pair with a dollop of lemon curd for an extra layer of flavor.

Drizzle with a vanilla glaze before serving.

Add a sprinkle of sea salt on top before serving for a sweet and salty contrast.

Use a liner in the slow cooker to make cleanup easier.

common recipe questions

Can I use fresh blueberries instead of pie filling?

You can use fresh blueberries, but you'll need to cook them with sugar, cornstarch, and a bit of lemon juice to create a filling similar to blueberry pie filling. Aim for about 4 cups of fresh blueberries.

What type of cake mix works best?

A standard yellow cake mix is preferred for its balance of flavor and sweetness. However, you could use white or even a lemon-flavored cake mix for a different flavor.

Can I add other fruits?

You can mix in other fruits like raspberries, blackberries, or even peaches to create a mixed fruit dump cake. Adjust the sugar level based on the sweetness of the fruit used.

How should I store leftovers?

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave, oven, or slow cooker to enjoy it warm.

Can I freeze blueberry dump cake?

You can freeze the dump cake. Let it cool completely before transferring it to a freezer-safe container. It can be frozen for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.

What is the best way to serve blueberry dump cake?

Serve warm in bowls, topped with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or yogurt.

Should I toast the walnuts?

Toasting the walnuts enhances their flavor. Toasting is not required, but it adds an extra touch.

How do I know when the dump cake is done?

The dump cake is done when the edges are bubbly and the top is set and not gooey.

Can I cook this in the oven instead of a slow cooker?

You can adapt the recipe for oven cooking. Lightly grease a baking dish, add the pie filling, layer the cake mix and sliced butter on top, and bake at 350 degrees F for about 30-40 minutes until golden brown.

What is the texture like?

The texture of blueberry dump cake is somewhat cake-like on top with a soft, gooey pie filling underneath.

This was pretty good. My kids really liked it. They don't like nuts so I just sprinkled them on one side. Definitely have to have with vanillia ice cream. Mine was done closer to 2 hours.
