1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/3 cup boiling water
1 1/2 cup chocolate syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 cup butter or margarine
directions
Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in boiling water, stir in chocolate syrup and vanilla. Set aside.
Combine flour, sugar, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and salt. Cut in butter or margarine with pastry blender to form coarse crumbs. Set aside 1 cup each of chocolate syrup mixture and crumbs.
Gently combine remaining chocolate mixture and crumbs, stirring just until crumbs are moistened (mixture will be lumpy). Pour reserved cup of chocolate mixture into unbaked pastry shell, spread chocolate-crumb mixture evenly over liquid in shell. Top with remaining cup crumbs.
Bake 375 degrees F for 60 minutes or until set. Cool, top with store-bought or homemade chocolate frosting.

Someone thought this was Funny Cake. It's not, I'm from PA and make Funny Cake. When I have more time I'll put it up. Maybe she looked at this recipe to quickly. I made this and believe you are to set aside 1/3 cup of crumbs not one cup. The chocolate crumb mixture is just too thin and there is no way you can spread this mixture over the liquid. I took this pie to a church supper and received good feedback. A dessert to make a day ahead, it's better!
We Pennsylvania Dutch call this Chocolate Funny Cake Pie. Will try your recipe.
