ingredients

6 cups white sugar
1 pint white corn syrup
1 pint cream or half-and-half
1 pound unsalted butter
1 pound chopped nuts
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

directions

Mix all ingredients in a large heavy pan. Place over medium heat. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.

Cook to a medium firm soft ball stage. This will take 40 minutes to 1 hour. You must constantly stir or candy will burn. (I try about 1 teaspoon in a cup of cold water. When it can be picked up with no effort, then candy is cooked.)

Remove from heat. Continue to stir and beat. When candy begins to stiffen, add the nuts and continue to stir. Candy will get very stiff and hard to stir.

When it will hold its shape, mold into loaf. Wrap and chill. Can be frozen.

Butter your hands before you work with the candy. It will still be very hot, so be careful.

My mom used to make a candy loaf that was divided in 3 parts, one got cocoa, one had a small amount of red ford coloring that made it pink and one was left plain. It was kneaded on a buttery surface, each layer was rolled out, stacked and rolled into a long tube and the sliced into bite sized pieces when cool. This sounds like it could be the recipe, at least it comes closer than anything I've been able to find!

My dad's nanny made 5 Pound Loaf. My grandfather made a paddle or blade that could be attached to a drill and made stirring much easier.

My fathers Grandmother use to make this for him and he was thrilled that I was able to continue the family tradition. It is super sweet and I will only make it for him. It is REALLY good.

After making this candy into a loaf, did you then roll it in cinnamon? I'm hoping this is similar to what my grandmother made. We lost that recipe.
