The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

ingredients
2 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 dash salt
2 egg whites
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional
3/4 cup chopped nuts
OR
3/4 cup candied fruit
OR
3/4 cup coconut
directions
In a 3 quart Pyrex bowl, combine sugar, water, corn syrup, and salt. Cover tightly and microwave on high for 5 minutes. Remove and stir thoroughly.
Microwave, uncovered on high for 9-12 minutes or until candy reaches hard ball stage (260 degrees F). Stir and turn bowl every 2-3 minutes. Towards end of cooking time, check and stir every 30 seconds.
Meanwhile, beat 2 egg whites until stiff peaks form. Slowly pour cooked syrup over egg whites, beating constantly. Add vanilla or flavoring of your choice.
Continue beating until candy begins to lose its shiny look and is quite thick. You will need a powerful mixer! Stir in nuts, candied fruit, coconut, or so on. Drop by teaspoon on wax paper.
