Blend the vibrant flavors of cherry pie filling and blueberries with a rich, buttery white cake mix. This easy-to-follow dump cake is perfect for any patriotic celebration or casual get-together.

1 can (21 ounce size) cherry pie filling
1 cup fresh blueberries, rinsed and dried
1 box (15-18 ounce size) dry white cake mix
1 cup butter, melted
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Grease a 9x13-inch cake pan.
Place the pie filling evenly in the bottom of the greased pan. Evenly sprinkle the blueberries over the top of the pie filling.
Place the cake mix in a bowl and mix it with a fork to break up any lumps (you can also put it through a flour sifter, if desired).
Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the top of the blueberries.
Drizzle the cake mix evenly with the melted butter. Do not stir.
Place the cake pan in the oven and bake at 325 degrees F for 45 minutes. Remove the cake from the oven and let the cake cool for 10 minutes on a wire rack.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
Experiment with different combinations of fruit pie fillings.
For a crispy topping, mix the cake mix with chopped nuts or oats before sprinkling over the fruit.
Serve the dump cake with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream.
To add a citrus tang, zest a lemon or orange over the fruit filling before adding the cake mix.
For a dairy-free option, substitute melted coconut oil or other plant-based butter alternatives for the butter in the recipe.
To make a more decadent version, drizzle caramel sauce or chocolate syrup over the warm dump cake before serving.
Try adding a pinch of salt to the cake mix for a subtle enhancement of all flavors in the dish.
If the top of the cake is browning too quickly, cover it loosely with foil for the remaining bake time.
A dump cake is a simple dessert made by layering fruit, cake mix, and usually melted butter in a baking dish, then baking until golden and bubbly.
You can use any fruit pie filling you prefer, such as apple, peach, or even mixed berries for a different flavor combination and a non red-white-and-blue theme.
Frozen blueberries can be used as a substitute for fresh blueberries in this recipe. Just make sure to thaw and drain excess liquid before using.
While white cake mix is commonly used in this recipe, you can experiment with different flavors like yellow cake mix, lemon cake mix, or funfetti for a different twist.
Leftover dump cake should be covered and refrigerated. It can be reheated in the oven at a low temperature or in the microwave to gently heat it.
While dump cake can be frozen, the texture of the fruit may change slightly upon thawing (the cherries and blueberries may become a little watery). Make sure it is tightly wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in an airtight container.
Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg over the fruit filling before adding the cake mix for a warm, spiced flavor. Or, 1/2 a teaspoon of almond extract can be mixed into the cherry pie filling. You can also add a handful of chopped nuts for texture.
Dump cake is best served fresh, but you can prepare the layers ahead of time and bake it just before serving for a quick and easy dessert option.
The top of the dump cake should be a light golden brown and the fruit filling bubbly when it's done baking.
9x13-inch Cake Pan: For baking the dump cake in the oven. Make sure to grease it first.
Fork: Used to mix the dry cake mix and to break up any lumps in the cake mix before sprinkling it over the blueberries.
Flour Sifter (optional): If desired, the dry cake mix can be put through a flour sifter.
Wire Rack: For cooling the dump cake after baking, allowing air to circulate underneath.
Vanilla Ice Cream: top this patriotic dump cake with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream for a classic dessert pairing. The cold sweetness of the ice cream will contrast beautifully with the warm, fruity flavors of the cake.
Whipped Cream: add an extra touch of indulgence by topping a scoop of dump cake with a generous dollop of whipped cream - it's like a cherry on top, but creamier.
Fresh Mint Leaves: garnish your dump cake with a few fresh mint leaves for a pop of color and a hint of refreshing flavor.
Cinnamon Sugar: dust a bit of cinnamon sugar over your slice of dump cake for a warm, spicy kick that will elevate the flavors to a whole new level.
Whiskey Caramel Sauce: Drizzle some warm whiskey caramel sauce over the cake for a boozy, indulgent touch. The rich flavors of the caramel will complement the sweet fruitiness of the cake.
