ingredients
8 ounces dates
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup boiling water
1 tablespoon shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
directions
Chop dates into small pieces. Sprinkle with baking soda and cover with the water. Let mixture cool.
Cream shortening and sugar together; add egg, walnuts and vanilla, and beat well. Add date mixture and mix well. Add flour sifted with the salt.
Bake in a 9" X 5" loaf pan at 325 degrees F for 45 to 50 minutes.

I tried this recipe but it wouldn't get done in the middle, instead it burned on the outside with the inside raw. I'm wondering if the date/water mixture should have been drained? I c water with on l l/2 c flour might be the problem. I ended up by tossing the semi/burned cake out.
