Adjust the amount of caraway seeds to taste, as their flavor can be strong.
To make a one-pot meal, you can add chunks of potatoes or carrots to cook along with the pork and sauerkraut.
Add a splash of apple cider or white wine to the crock pot for a subtle fruity note.
If the sauerkraut is too sour, you can balance it out with a pinch of sugar or honey.
Let the cooked pork rest for a few minutes before slicing.
common recipe questions
Can I use a different cut of pork for this recipe?
While pork loin roast is ideal for this dish due to its tenderness, you can also use pork shoulder or butt for a more flavorful but slightly fattier result.
Should I brown the pork before slow-cooking?
While browning the pork before slow-cooking can add flavor, it's not necessary for this recipe. The slow-cooking process yields a more than flavorful dish.
Can I use fresh cabbage instead of sauerkraut?
Sauerkraut's fermentation adds a unique tangy flavor that fresh cabbage doesn't have, but you can try using fresh cabbage that is cooked and add some vinegar or lemon juice for a similar tang.
How can I make the dish less tangy?
If you prefer a milder flavor, you can rinse the sauerkraut before adding it to the crock pot to reduce its tartness.
Can I add additional seasonings to the pork?
Adjust the seasoning to taste by adding herbs like thyme, rosemary, or garlic, if desired.
How should I store leftovers?
Store any leftover pork and sauerkraut in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop.
Can I freeze the cooked dish?
You can freeze the cooked pork and sauerkraut in a freezer-safe container for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.
