Top shelf tequila deserves a place to shine. This margarita recipe simply adds fresh lime juice and agave syrup for sweetness. Your new favorite margarita is served.
1 1/2 ounce top shelf tequila, reposado or blanco
1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
2 teaspoons agave syrup, or to taste
Combine the tequila, lime juice, and agave syrup in a shaker with ice. Shake well.
Place ice in a margarita glass. Pour the margarita over the ice and serve immediately. If desired, you can rim the glass with salt first.
To make a blended margarita, add the ingredients and 1 cup ice to a blender. Process until desired consistency.
Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor.
Try different top shelf tequilas to find your favorite for this cocktail.
Adjust the sweetness by adding agave syrup gradually and tasting as you go.
For a different flavor, try using mezcal instead of tequila for a smoky twist.
To make a spicy margarita, muddle jalapeno slices or add a splash of hot sauce to the shaker.
If using a blender, start on low speed and gradually increase to blend the ice smoothly.
Top shelf tequila refers to high-quality tequila that is typically made from 100% agave, often aged longer for a smoother flavor. It's usually literally on the top shelf (or upper shelves) at the liquor store.
You can use reposado or blanco tequila for this margarita recipe, but using a top shelf tequila is important. Cheap or low-quality tequila can ruin a margarita.
Agave syrup adds sweetness to the margarita without the extra flavor that comes from using simple syrup, making it a perfect complement to the tequila and lime juice.
You can adjust the amount of agave syrup to taste.
It will affect the flavor somewhat but you can use a sugar-free simple syrup instead of the agave for a "skinny" margarita.
To rim a glass with salt, lightly wet the rim with lime juice or water, then invert the glass and dip it into a plate of salt to coat. Shake off any excess before pouring the margarita.
You can easily scale up this recipe to make a pitcher of margaritas.
You can experiment with adding other flavors such as fresh fruit purees, herbs like mint or basil, or even a splash of orange liqueur.
This margarita is best served in a margarita glass with or without a salted rim, and garnished with a lime wedge. But, it can be served in another kind of glass if you don't have margarita glasses.

This was the best margarita I think I've ever had. So simple too with just three ingredients - no need to fuss up a good thing with a bunch of extras.

Wow, simple and tasty. I had never heard of agave syrup. Found it at the local grocery store. Great recipe!
