2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 dash salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 egg whites
3/4 cup sour milk or buttermilk
1/2 cup amaretto
1 cup slivered almonds
directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Grease and lightly flour 2 medium size loaf pans. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
In a large mixing bowl, beat the shortening with an electric mixer for 1 minute
Add sugar and vanilla, beat until creamy. Add egg whites, one at a time, beating 2 minutes after each.
Mix amaretto and milk together in a separate bowl.
Alternately add dry and wet ingredients to the egg-sugar-shortening mixture, beating on a low speed until combined after each addition.
Stir in almonds, pour mixture into the loaf pans.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 40-45 minutes, until tops are golden brown and inserted wooden toothpick comes out clean.
