Macaroni salad is great as a side dish at barbecues, picnics, and potlucks. It pairs well with grilled meats, fried chicken, or can be served alongside a variety of other salads.
Large Mixing Bowl or Hotel Pan: A large mixing bowl or hotel pan is necessary for combining the ham, macaroni, cheddar cheese, peas, celery, onions, and olives, making sure that all ingredients are well mixed.
Measuring Cups and Spoons: For measuring ingredients such as the celery, vinegar, onion salt and garlic salt.
Spatula or Large Spoon: For mixing the ingredients together thoroughly in the large bowl or hotel pan, making sure that the dressing coats all components evenly.
Knife: For chopping the ham, celery, onions, and olives (if not pre-sliced).
Cutting Board: Provides a stable surface for cutting the onions and any other ingredients.
Grilled Chicken: The savory flavor of grilled chicken adds a protein contrast that complements the macaroni salad.
Pulled Pork Sandwich: Serve the macaroni salad as a side for pulled pork sandwiches; the creamy, tangy salad counteracts the smoky richness of the pork.
Deviled Eggs: A classic pairing that goes along with the picnic or potluck vibe. The creamy texture and slight tang in deviled eggs mirror the flavors in the macaroni salad.
BBQ Ribs: The sweetness and smokiness of BBQ ribs contrast well with the creamy, rich macaroni salad.
Sliced Tomatoes: Fresh slices of tomato offer a refreshing, juicy contrast to the creamy salad.
Cornbread: A slice of cornbread brings a sweet and crumbly texture that complements the rich, creamy macaroni salad.
Crispy Bacon: Crumbled crispy bacon on top adds a savory element and crunchy texture.
Wine Pairings
Chardonnay: A medium to full-bodied Chardonnay, particularly one that's oaked, would work well here. Its buttery textures and hints of tropical fruits play nicely with the richness from the cheese and cream while balancing the saltiness of the ham.
Sauvignon Blanc: Look for a food-friendly Sauvignon Blanc that's crisp and zesty. Its bright acidity and citrus notes can complement the varied flavors of the salad.
Pinot Grigio: This light, crisp white wine offers refreshing acidity with melon and pear notes. It's a great match for the dish's creaminess and lends a nice balance to the richness of the salad.
Other Alcohol Pairings
Pale Ale: A pale ale with its hoppy yet balanced flavors would help to cut through the creaminess of the salad while matching well with the savory elements, like the ham and olives. Look for one that isn't overly bitter.
Sparkling Wine: A dry sparkling wine, like a Brut Champagne, has wonderful acidity and bubbles that refresh the palate while complementing the salad's savory flavors. Plus, it feels fancy!
Vodka: A light, clean vodka can be fun in a cocktail pair. You can even mix it with something bright like a citrus soda or tonic for a refreshing drink that pairs well without stealing the show from the salad.
Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Creamy Iced Tea: A lightly sweetened creamy iced tea brings a perfect balance of flavor and creaminess.
Herbal Iced Tea: Try an herbal iced tea, like chamomile or mint. The light floral or cooling flavors can add a refreshing note alongside the heavy elements of the salad.
Fruit Punch: A mild fruit punch with flavors like pineapple and orange can bring a fun, fruity counterpoint to the savory notes in the macaroni salad without being too strong or sugary.

This is the recipe we use at our church for most occasions. We're making it again tomorrow for the Fourth of July festival we're having. We make multiple batches and store them in ziptop bags and just bring them out as we need them. Everyone always enjoys it.
