Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.

30-60 minutes
ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/4 cup sweetened flaked coconut
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup pecan pieces, coarsely chopped
directions
Position rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F. Butter a 9 inch square baking pan. Sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
In a large bowl, using a hand held electric mixer set at medium speed, cream the butter with the sugars for 2 to 3 minutes, until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Reduce speed to low and add the flour mixture, beating just until combined. Stir in coconut, chocolate chips, and pecans.
Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake the bars for 20 to 25 minutes until the surface is dry and golden and a cake tester or toothpick inserted in the center of bars comes out slightly moist. Cool the bars on a wire rack.
Cut into bars and remove them from the pan with a spatula. Store the completely cooled bars in an airtight container.
