As we get ready for another Super Bowl, you might be thinking about all the great food and football you and your family will enjoy. Since food is so closely tied into the Super Bowl festivities, strategizing a Super Bowl menu has taken on almost as much importance as planning for some of the other major food related holidays. And not that we need one, but it’s another excuse to try out some new recipes and eat some really yummy finger foods.
Game day favorites like seven layer dip, chicken wings, chili, and pigs in a blanket are all worthwhile calorie splurges that kids love. Make your best guacamole recipe, and you’ll also be sure to get your veggies in. After all, it is said to be the time of year with some of the highest avocado sales, coming in a close second to Cinco De Mayo. Although there is no agreement on the official statistic, the California Avocado Commission has stated that enough avocados are purchased during Super Bowl season to cover an entire football field waist high in the fruit.
Guacamole is the best condiment to adorn one of our other game day favorites, a big plate piled high with nachos. Everyone has their favorite nacho combination, adding on to the basis of tortilla chips and cheese any other number of Tex-Mex ingredients like ground taco meat, chicken, beans, chopped tomatoes, sour cream, black olives, scallions, and jalapenos. I like to use grated cheddar or Monterrey Jack cheese and bake in the oven for few minutes until the cheese melts, but some may prefer cheese in an already liquid form. The secret to really great nachos is to spread the chips across a large sheet pan or cookie tray in a single layer, thus covering each chip with some of the cheese.
Buffalo wings are another quintessential Super Bowl food. Easy to pick up and eat with one hand, they provide that added zing to make the game that much more exciting. While wings remain one of my husband's and my favorite treats, super spicy doesn’t fly with the little ones around here. If your kids aren’t a fan of hot wings then try these Honey mustard wings. I guarantee everyone will be licking their fingers and coming back for more!
For my former wing eating champion hubby, I might set a few wings aside and make them traditional Buffalo style – glazed with a combo of red hot sauce and butter.
In salute to this year’s teams, New England and New York, you could also stage a clam chowder face-off: Creamy New England versus zesty, tomatoey Manhattan clam chowder. Although my football allegiance may tie to one team, my chowder preference most decidedly falls with the other!
And with this year being a bit warmer of a winter, why not indulge in hot fudge sundaes to top it all off. Get it? Sundaes on Super Bowl Sunday!
After all, who doesn’t love to graze through the entire game and accompanying fanfare in a tribute to all American family favorites? Whatever you like to have for your Super Bowl spread, it’s time to put the New Year’s diet on hold and throw caution to the wind with some of your family’s favorite comfort foods.
So, what’s on your Super Bowl menu this year?
