Give your food a bold makeover with this fun horseradish whipped cream sauce. Don't be fooled by its simplicity; it packs a flavorful punch that'll have everyone talking.
1 cup whipping cream
1/4 cup grated fresh horseradish
1/4 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 dash Tabasco sauce
Place the cream in a bowl and beat with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form.
Fold the horseradish, seasoned salt, salt, and Tabasco into the whipped cream. Cover the bowl and chill the sauce for 1 hour.
Use fresh horseradish for the most intense flavor; the potency of horseradish diminishes over time.
Chill your mixing bowl and beaters before whipping the cream to get the best volume and texture.
Fold in the horseradish gently to maintain the fluffiness of the whipped cream.
Taste the sauce before chilling; remember that flavors will meld and intensify after resting.
Feel free to experiment with different spices or ingredients, like lemon juice or chopped chives, for added flavor.
This sauce also works great as a spread on sandwiches or as a dip for vegetables.
If using prepared horseradish, taste frequently as it's easier to add more spice than to tone it down after it's mixed.
For a twist, try adding a bit of Dijon mustard or sour cream.
Horseradish sauce is particularly popular with beef dishes, especially prime rib, steak, and roast beef. It also complements seafood, such as crab and shrimp, and can be served with vegetables.
You can use prepared horseradish, but the flavor might be milder and not as fresh as using freshly grated horseradish. Adjust the amount used to taste.
Yes, heavy cream or creme fraiche can be used instead of whipping cream. For a lighter option, you can try using Greek yogurt, but this will change the flavor and texture.
In an airtight container in the refrigerator, the sauce can be stored for up to 3-4 days. It's best to keep it chilled until you're ready to serve.
Freezing is not recommended as the texture will change upon thawing, causing the sauce to separate.
Serve the sauce chilled as a dip or drizzle it over your main dish. It can be garnished with fresh herbs.
You can control the heat by adding more or less horseradish or Tabasco sauce to taste. Experiment to find your preferred level of heat.
Electric Mixer: For whipping the cream to stiff peaks.
Mixing Bowl: A medium to large bowl for combining the whipping cream with the other ingredients and for whipping the cream itself.
Measuring Cups and Spoons: For measuring out the whipping cream, grated fresh horseradish, seasoned salt, and salt.
Spatula: For gently folding the horseradish and seasonings into the whipped cream without deflating it.
Plastic Wrap or Lid: To cover the mixing bowl for chilling the sauce in the refrigerator after it's prepared. This helps maintain the sauce's freshness and prevents absorption of other odors.
Roast Beef: This whipped cream horseradish sauce brings a creamy, sharp contrast to the robust flavor of roast beef.
Prime Rib: Adding this sauce to prime rib balances the richness of the meat with its light, tangy flavor.
Grilled Salmon: The creamy texture and horseradish's spiciness provide a delightful counterpoint to the richness of grilled salmon.
Potato Skins: Use the sauce as a topping for crispy potato skins. The creamy texture complements the crunch of the skins, while the horseradish adds a zesty brightness.
Shrimp Cocktail: This sauce serves as an excellent alternative to traditional cocktail sauce. The creaminess and heat pair beautifully with the sweet, briny flavor of shrimp.
Crackers: Spread the whipped horseradish sauce on crackers for an easy appetizer.
Cheese Platter: Include this sauce on a cheese platter alongside tangy cheeses like goat cheese or aged cheddar.
Veggie Platter: Use it as a dip for fresh vegetables. The cooling creaminess offers a refreshing contrast to fresh, crisp vegetables like celery and cucumbers.

A can of cream of mushroom soup can be a real dinner saver. It works great in casseroles and can turn into a sauce or gravy in a pinch.
Not to be confused with evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk is very sweet (and very sticky) and used primarily in desserts.

I used a little less horseradish than called for because I didn't want it very strong. I like that this recipe uses heavy cream because that can be whipped to a thicker consistency than other recipes that use something like half and half or sour cream. I reduced the serving size to 1/2 cup because that was what I needed for a recipe.
