ingredients

1 (10-inch size) graham cracker crust (homemade or purchased)
1 can (21 ounce size) blueberry pie filling
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
12 ounces nondairy whipped topping, such as Cool Whip, thawed
1 can (21 ounce size) cherry pie filling

directions

Pour the blueberry pie filling into the graham cracker crust. Place the crust in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, combine the cream cheese and powdered sugar in a mixing bowl. Beat on medium speed with an electric mixer until fluffy and smooth. Fold the whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture.

Gently spread the cream cheese over the chilled blueberry filling. Return the pie to the refrigerator for 30 minutes to set.

Spread the cherry pie filling over the cream cheese layer and again return the pie to the refrigerator. Let the pie chill for 4-8 hours before serving.

recipe tips

Add a layer of fresh berries between the fruit and cream cheese layers.

For a tangy twist, add a tablespoon of lemon juice or zest to the cream cheese mixture. It will enhance the flavors of the pie fillings as well.

If using a homemade whipped cream, stabilize it with a little gelatin or cornstarch to prevent it from deflating.

Decorate the top of the pie with additional whipped cream rosettes or fresh fruit before serving.

common recipe questions

Can I use regular whipped cream instead of nondairy whipped topping?

You can use homemade whipped cream instead of nondairy whipped topping if desired. Just make sure it is stable enough to hold its shape or it may become runny.

How long should the pie be refrigerated before serving?

For best results, refrigerate the pie for at least 4 hours to allow the layers to set and the flavors to meld together. It's not recommended to chill it for longer than 8 hours before serving as the colors of the pie fillings may start to bleed into the cream cheese layer.

Can I use different fruit pie fillings?

You can customize the pie by using different fruit pie fillings, such as raspberry, apple, or peach if not serving for the 4th of July (or other US-themed holiday).

What is the best way to store leftovers of this pie?

Cover the pie loosely with plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. The crust may soften slightly over time and the colors may bleed into each other.

Can this pie be frozen?

It's not recommended to freeze this pie as the texture of the cream cheese mixture and whipped topping may change when thawed.

tools needed

Mixing Bowl: To beat the cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth, as well as fold in the whipped topping to create the creamy layer of the pie.

Electric Mixer: Makes the process of beating the cream cheese and powdered sugar together much easier and quicker.

Cute Pie Server: Okay, this one isn't necessary but come on, it's a red, white, and blue pie! It deserves to be served with a little flair. Plus, it helps create an Instagram-worthy moment for your patriotic dessert.

what goes with it?

Classic Vanilla Ice Cream: Scoop a generous amount of creamy vanilla ice cream alongside a slice of this patriotic pie for a cool and refreshing contrast to the fruity flavors. The vanilla will help balance out the sweetness of the pie filling.

Firework Cocktail: Mix up a red, white, and blue cocktail to enjoy with your festive pie. The colorful drink will add an extra pop of fun to your meal and boost the celebratory vibe of this patriotic dessert.

Sparkler Skewers: Create skewers of red and blue fruits, like strawberries and blueberries, to serve alongside the pie. The fresh fruit will provide a light and refreshing contrast to the creamy richness of the pie.

beverage pairings

Wine Pairings
Rose: We're talking light, refreshing, and slightly fruity. The crispness will contrast nicely with the creaminess of the pie, and the subtle sweetness will complement the fruit fillings.

Sparkling Moscato: If you're feeling fancy, a sparkling moscato can bring a touch of effervescence to your patriotic party.

Pinot Grigio: A dry white wine like Pinot Grigio can cut through the richness of the cream cheese and whipped topping while not overwhelming the delicate fruit flavors. Look for one with citrus notes to brighten up the dessert experience.

Other Alcohol Pairings
Blueberry Beer: Yes, it's a thing! A fruity blueberry beer can complement the blueberry pie filling in the pie, enhancing those berry flavors. The light, refreshing taste can balance out the sweetness of the dessert without overshadowing it.

Vodka Lemonade: Mix up a zesty vodka lemonade for a fun and refreshing drink to pair with your red, white, and blue pie.

White Russian: Channel your inner 'Dude' and sip on a White Russian with your patriotic pie. The creamy cocktail with coffee liqueur and vodka can bring out the dessert's richness while adding a touch of indulgence.

Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Iced Chai Latte: Get cozy with an iced chai latte to enjoy alongside your festive pie. The warm spices in the chai can complement the flavors of the dessert, while the cold, creamy drink provides a nice contrast to the pie's texture.

Vanilla Milkshake: Indulge in a classic vanilla milkshake as a non-alcoholic treat with this dessert. The creamy, sweet milkshake can enhance the creaminess of the pie and provide a nostalgic pairing that's just as satisfying.

Fruit Punch: A fruity and refreshing fruit punch can add a burst of flavor to each bite of your red, white, and blue pie. The mix of fruit juices can complement the various fruit fillings in the dessert for a fun and vibrant pairing.

  1. Guest Foodie REVIEW:

I needed a last minute festive looking dessert to take to a last minute invite to a party. This was so simple and looked so cute when you cut into it. I didn't try it because I can't have sugar but it was gobbled up quickly and two people asked me for the recipe so it must have been good.
