The sour cream in this recipe not only adds a creamy element but it also helps balance the sweetness of the apple filling. The cinnamon sugar crumble on top adds texture and flavor.
1 9-inch pie shell
Filling
2 cups apples, peeled and sliced
3/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cup sour cream
1 egg, beaten
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Topping
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup sugar
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Place the apples in the pie shell. Combine the sugar, flour, and salt and mix well. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the apples and toss the apples gently to coat them in the mixture.
In a bowl, stir together the sour cream, egg, and vanilla. Pour the mixture over the apples.
Place the pie in the oven and bake at 400 degrees F for 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350 degrees F and bake the pie for 10-15 minutes or until the apples are soft and the filling has thickened.
Combine the topping ingredients and sprinkle over the pie filling. Bake the pie for 10 more minutes or until the topping is browned.
Remove the pie from the oven and let cool until the pie is slightly warm. Serve the pie warm. Store leftovers in the refrigerator in a covered container.
