Beer makes batters better, meat more tender, and sauces more flavorful.

This spicy version of the classic sloppy joes sandwich is made with ground beef and is simmered in the crock pot. It gets its heat from spicy V8 juice, chili powder, and jalapenos.
1 1/2 pound ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 cup spicy tomato-vegetable juice
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 tablespoons jalapeno peppers, chopped
3 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon Louisiana hot sauce
2 bay leaves
1/2 teaspoon oregano, dried*
salt and pepper, to taste
8 hamburger buns
shredded Mozzarella or Jack cheese
In a large skillet cook ground beef, onion, and garlic until meat is brown and onion is translucent. Drain off fat.
Meanwhile, in a 4 quart crock pot or slow cooker combine tomato-vegetable juice, tomato sauce, water, brown sugar, jalapeno peppers, chili powder, hot sauce, bay leaves and oregano. Stir in meat mixture.
Cover; cook on low heat setting for 8 hours or high heat setting for 4 hours. Toast buns; spoon meat mixture over buns and sprinkle with cheese.
Add or substitute basil, marjoram, thyme or other herbs as desired.

The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

These were absolutely the best sloppy joes I have ever tasted! I always have used the "canned" stuff with browned ground beef and I really didn't like them although my family did. When I decided to try this recipe, I was very pleased. I did omit adding the jalapenos and hot sauce when making the recipe. My husband added them to his sandwiches when I served them. My friend always uses a Mexican brand hot tomato sauce and that is what I had on hand so I put that in in place of the called for tomato sauce. I did have left overs as there are only 2 of us at home now, but I imagine the left overs will not last long! Thanks again for submitting this recipe, it is definitely a "keeper" and I will be making it again soon. Claudine Fort Worth, TX

These sloppy joes were wonderful! They had just the right blend of ingredients. They were flavorful and spicy, and the jalapenos weren't over powering at all. In fact, we added a few extra :)
