recipe tips

Marinate the brisket overnight with your favorite spices for deeper flavors.

Slicing the cooked brisket against the grain will yield tender slices.

Serve with a side of crusty bread to soak up the flavorful juices.

For a zesty kick, add a bit of Worcestershire sauce or hot sauce to the cooking liquid.

Feel free to add other vegetables like onions, parsnips, or celery.

Use the leftover cooking liquid as a base for a flavorful gravy or sauce.

Try different herbs and spices like bay leaves, garlic, or smoked paprika.

common recipe questions

Why use onion soup mix?

Onion soup mix adds depth of flavor, seasoned salt, and natural sweetness to the dish, saving time by eliminating the need to prepare seasoning from scratch.

Can I substitute different cuts of meat for brisket?

You can use cuts like chuck roast or round roast, but they will have a different texture and flavor. Brisket is preferred for its marbling and tenderness when slow-cooked.

What can I use instead of tomato paste?

You can substitute tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes, but you may need to adjust the quantity to yield a similar flavor intensity. Adding a bit of sugar can help balance the acidity.

Can I cook this recipe in an oven instead of a crock pot?

You can cook it in a covered roasting pan at a low temperature (around 325 degrees F) for about 3-4 hours or until the brisket is tender, but keep an eye on the liquid level and add more if needed.

What if I don't have a crock pot?

If you don't have a crock pot, a Dutch oven can be used on the stovetop or in the oven. Just keep the heat low and add enough liquid to prevent burning.

How do I know when brisket is done?

Brisket is done when it's fork-tender and has an internal temperature of at least 195 degrees F to 205 degrees F, which allows the connective tissue to break down properly.

How should I store leftover brisket?

Cool the brisket completely, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.

Can I freeze the cooked brisket?

Yes, brisket can be frozen. Wrap it tightly to avoid freezer burn and it will keep well for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.

What is the best way to reheat brisket?

Reheat brisket slowly in a low oven (about 250 degrees F) or in a skillet over low heat with a little broth or water to maintain moisture.

How can I add flavor to the carrots and potatoes?

You can toss them with olive oil, salt, pepper, and herbs such as rosemary or thyme before adding them to the crock pot for additional flavor.

tools needed

Crock Pot: For cooking the beef brisket and vegetables.

Measuring Cups and Spoons: For measuring the water and tomato paste.

Mixing Bowl: Used for whisking together the onion soup mix, water, and tomato paste until well blended before pouring it over the brisket.

Whisk: For combining the onion soup mix, water, and tomato paste in the mixing bowl thoroughly.

Cutting Board: For slicing the cooked brisket against the grain after it has been removed from the crock pot.

Sharp Knife: For slicing the brisket into portions.

Vegetable Peeler: For removing the skin from the carrots and potatoes to prepare them for cooking.

what goes with it?

Horseradish Sauce: A classic pairing with brisket, horseradish adds a sharp, tangy contrast that cuts through the richness of the beef.

Creamy Coleslaw: The crunch and acidity of coleslaw provide a refreshing contrast to the tender, savory brisket.

Mashed Potatoes: A creamy side like mashed potatoes complements the brisket's juices and creates a comforting, hearty meal.

Garlic Bread: This adds a crunchy contrast and is perfect for soaking up the flavorful juices from the brisket.

Balsamic Reduction: Drizzling a balsamic reduction over the brisket can add a tangy sweetness that underscores the savory elements of the dish.

Green Beans Almandine: The crunch of toasted almonds and the freshness of green beans provide a nice balance to the richness of the brisket and potatoes.

Pan Gravy: Using the drippings from the brisket to make a gravy can enrich the entire dish.

Cornbread: A slightly sweet and buttery cornbread offers texture and a comforting contrast to the savory brisket and vegetables.

Fresh Herb Garnish: Sprinkling fresh herbs like parsley or chives on the brisket before serving can brighten the dish's presentation.

beverage pairings

Wine Pairings
Merlot: This wine is smooth and fruity, often with notes of black cherry and plum that will match well with the savory flavors of the brisket.

Cabernet Sauvignon: A classic choice for beef, look for one that's full-bodied with tannins that can stand up to the brisket's heartiness. Flavors of dark fruits like currant and blackberry will compliment the meal beautifully.

Syrah/Shiraz: This wine offers bold fruit and peppery notes that pair nicely with the spice and savoriness of the brisket. A smooth Australian Shiraz with cocoa undertones can be a fantastic companion to everything on your plate.

Other Alcohol Pairings
Red Blend: A structured red blend with good fruitiness and hints of herbal notes can bridge all the flavors on your plate. Look for something with a blend of grapes like Merlot, Cabernet, and possibly a hint of Zinfandel for depth.

Bourbon: With sweet vanilla and caramel notes, a good bourbon brings a nice contrast to the salty savory beef. Try it on the rocks or with a splash of water.

Dark Lager: A robust dark lager can work wonders with this dish. Its malty sweetness and hints of chocolate can align nicely with the richness of the brisket and the vegetables.

Non-Alcoholic Pairings
Sparkling Water with Lemon: A refreshing choice that adds a hint of zesty brightness.

Apple Cider: Hot or cold, apple cider has a tartness that complements the earthy flavors of the brisket and veggies. Plus, its slight sweetness pairs well to offset the savory components.

Root Beer: For a fun twist, a nice frosty glass of root beer matches up to the heartiness of the meal. Its sweetness and unique spices echo the depth of flavors found in the brisket and vegetables, making for a great combo.

  1. shelleyd REVIEW:

I have better luck with brisket when cooked on low so that's the cooking option I chose. Good flavor. I was afraid it might be too salty with the onion soup mix but it wasn't. The brisket was very tender.
