Non-stick cooking spray works great but it contains all kinds of scary chemicals. Keep this homemade non-stick spread on hand and use in recipes calling for the spray (or anytime you need to grease a pan)

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup vegetable shortening, at room temp
1/2 cup all-purpose flour

directions

Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 3 minutes or until smooth.

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 6 months. Use a pastry brush or paper towel to spread the mixture on muffin tins, cake pans, bread pans, cookie sheets, etc.

recipe tips

Make sure all ingredients are at room temperature so they blend evenly. You don't want flour clumps in the mixture as it can burn if not mixed with the oil and shortening.

Use a glass or plastic container for storing the homemade cooking spray in the refrigerator.

Apply a thin, even layer of the homemade cooking spray for best results.

Label the container with the date the homemade cooking spray was made. Discard any unused product after 6 months.

common recipe questions

What is the purpose of homemade cooking spray?

Homemade cooking spray serves as a natural alternative to store-bought aerosol cooking sprays, replacing the need for non-stick coating with a simple, homemade option.

Can I use a different type of oil in this recipe?

You can experiment with different oils such as canola, olive, or coconut oil. Ideally you want an oil with a high smoke point if you are going to use it with high cooking temperatures.

Why include vegetable shortening in the homemade cooking spray?

Vegetable shortening adds a solid fat component to the mixture, helping it to adhere to baking surfaces more effectively.

Can I omit the flour in this recipe?

The flour in the recipe acts as a stabilizer to thicken and bind the oil and shortening. Omitting it may result in a less effective solution.

How should I store the homemade cooking spray?

Store the homemade cooking spray in an airtight container in the refrigerator to prevent spoilage.

Can I use this homemade cooking spray for greasing a grill or skillet?

You can use this homemade cooking spray to grease various cooking surfaces, including grills and skillets, for non-stick cooking.

What is the best way to apply this homemade cooking spray to baking pans?

Use a pastry brush or paper towel to evenly spread the homemade cooking spray on baking pans, to make sure they are fully coverage for non-stick purposes.

i just use lard because all cooking sprays contain soy also called lecithin. my daugheter is allergic to the soy/lecithin in the spray.

    • This works better than lard or plain shortening because it's less greasy
