A classic, soft sugar cookie recipe. Decorate as desired or simply leave plain (they are that good).

ingredients

1 1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter-flavored shortening
2 eggs
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

directions

Combine the sugar and shortening in a mixer bowl. Beat on medium speed until completely creamed together.

Add the eggs, corn syrup, and vanilla and beat until fluffy and light.

In another bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

With the mixer running on low, slowly add the flour mixture to the egg mixture until completely incorporated.

Remove the dough from the bowl and divide into four pieces. Wrap each piece in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1-2 hours (or longer).

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Sprinkle a work surface with flour. Roll out one of the dough quarters on the floured surface until it is 1/4-inch thick. You can roll it between pieces of waxed paper if desired.

Cut the dough with cookie cutters and place on a baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough.

Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5-7 minutes or until cookie is just beginning to turn very light golden brown around the edges. Do not overbake. It may still be soft in the middle, that's fine.

Remove from the oven and let cool for 2 minutes on the baking sheet then remove to a cooling rack.

Store cookies in an airtight container.

These are without a doubt the BEST sugar cookies I've ever made or tasted. They're simply perfect! They are soft, chewy, flavorful, and keep for a long time (if no one is around to eat them)! I had much better luck when I rolled the dough into balls rather than flattening the dough and then cutting them out. Not only did it save time, but the cookies were puffed up more, making them thicker and more enjoyable to eat rather than being paper thin and crunchy. The cooking time takes a little longer, but not much - only a couple of minutes. I add M&M's to the batter because it's my Fiance's all time favorite cookie! Try it...they're even more delicious then!! AWESOME recipe!

If you desire a sugar cookie that is soft, chewy and has a delicate sugar and vanilla flavor then this is your cookie! I love it and my family begs for them! Some sugar cookie recipes are too buttery tasting or has that lemon zing to them, these are perfect, a real sugar cookie. I added a drop of almond extract to a batch and those were delicious too!!
