Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.

1 cup sugar
2 cups butter, at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 tablespoon lemon rind grated
2 eggs
6 cups cake flour
Cream together sugar and butter in an electric mixer. When fluffy, add vanilla and lemon rind. Blend well. Add eggs, one at a time; mix well. Remove from mixer. Add cake flour; blend with a heavy mixing spoon. Chill dough in refrigerator 1 hour or overnight.
Roll dough to 1/8" thickness and cut out with cookie cutters. Bake in preheated 375 degrees F oven until brown, about 7-8 minutes.
If colored granulated sugar is used for decoration, prepare an egg wash (1 well beaten egg with 1 tbls milk) and brush over the cutout dough. Sprinkle with sugar and bake.
