A can of cream of mushroom soup can be a real dinner saver. It works great in casseroles and can turn into a sauce or gravy in a pinch.

These sugary rose petals make beautiful decorations for cakes and other baked goods.
1/3 cup water
1 cup granulated sugar
rose petals, washed and fully dried
fine granulated sugar or powdered sugar
Combine the water and sugar in a heavy saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a low boil and cook until the mixture reaches hard ball stage (250 degrees F on a candy thermometer). Have another large pan of hot water ready. It should be big enough to set the pan of syrup in to keep it warm.
Remove the pan from the heat and place in the larger pan.
Using tweezers or small tongs, carefully dip the rose petals into the sugar syrup, letting any excess drip off. Then place them on waxed paper.
When the petals are almost dry, dip them in fine, granulated sugar (or powdered sugar) and place on a fresh sheet of waxed paper to fully dry. It will take about 24 hours to harden.

These are so tricky to make but once you get the hang of it they turn out great. The suggestion to make the syrup thinner was spot on and made it a lot easier. I also brushed the syrup on the larger petals which worked great but was difficult with the smaller ones. I made these for a bridal shower and completely forgot to take photos but they looked pretty close to the picture here.

Iâm so disappointed. I attempted this with two different batches and both were a miserable failure 😢 The âsyrupâ was too heavy and caused the petals to curl into blobs. They tasted divine still. So 3 stars ✨
The petals are a bit tricky to work with and do tend to curl. Try cooking the syrup a little less so it is thinner if you are finding them too difficult to work with.
