Eggless Buttermilk Coffee Cake

ingredients
2 cups brown sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 cup butter or regular margarine
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
1/2 cup nuts (optional)
directions
Mix the sugar, flour, and butter until it has the consistency of fine crumbs. Remove and reserve 1/2 cup of the mixture for topping.
To the remaining flour mixture, add baking soda, salt, and buttermilk. Blend well. Spread in a 9 inch x 9 inch greased pan. Sprinkle the reserved crumbs over top (with nuts).
Bake at 375 degrees F for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

This cake lacked flavor. Way too sweet; like eating a bag of cotton candy. I would add cinnamon for flavor and definitely adjust recipe to add egg for lightness and as a binding agent.
