- #26179
under 30 minutes
ingredients
2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal*
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 cup dark brown sugar, lightly packed
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1/3 cup water, approximate
directions
* Don't substitute rolled oats in this recipe. Old-fashioned oatmeal looks something like white cornmeal or couscous and is sometimes called "Scottish oatmeal." It is quite hard in texture. It is readily available in supermarkets or bulk food stores.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Mix dry ingredients, rub in shortening with fingers as for pastry. Add just enough cold water to make a dough.
Roll out 1/4" thick and cut into shapes with floured cutter. Dough may be inclined to fall apart a bit so handle carefully and, if necessary, just roll out a quarter of the dough at a time. It can be re-rolled.
Bake in upper third of oven for 15-20 minutes or until browned on bottom. Remove to wire rack to cool.

The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.
