If you're tired of pasta, why not change it up and go with gnocchi? A meaty tomato sauce with garlic and onions makes this dish foolproof. Try it with homemade gnocchi if you're looking for a delicious challenge.
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 1/2 pound extra-lean ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 tablespoons minced garlic
1 can (29 ounce size) crushed tomatoes in puree
1 can (14.5 ounce size) tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
salt, as needed
1 1/2 pound gnocchi
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, onion, and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until the beef is browned and the onion is tender.
Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, oregano, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt (if using). Mix well. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and let the sauce cook, uncovered, for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
While the sauce is simmering, cook the gnocchi in a pot of boiling water. Cook just until they float to the top. Remove the gnocchi with a slotted spoon and divide between individual serving bowls.
Spoon the sauce over the gnocchi and serve immediately.
Try pan-frying cooked gnocchi in butter or oil for a crispy exterior before adding the sauce.
For a spicier sauce, use hot Italian sausage in place of ground beef.
Use 2 tablespoons fresh minced oregano in place of the dried for more flavor.
Taste the sauce before serving and adjust the seasoning as needed.

Leftover cooked gnocchi can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stove with a splash of water to prevent drying out.
Ground turkey or chicken can be used as a leaner alternative to ground beef in the meat sauce. Adjust seasoning to taste as they tend to be less flavorful.
