recipe tips

Using fresh, ripe tomatoes will enhance the flavor, so choose the best quality you can find.

Consider roasting the vegetables, particularly the onions and jalapenos, before adding them to the crock pot for a deeper flavor.

If your sauce tastes too acidic, add a bit more sugar to balance it out.

Serve the sauce over rice or use it as a dip for tortilla chips, adding cheese or guacamole.

Try different peppers, such as poblano or serrano, for varied flavors and heat levels.

Let the taco sauce cool completely before transferring to containers to avoid condensation.

For a smokier flavor, add a small amount of smoked paprika or chipotle powder.

Make sure to stir the sauce halfway through cooking.

For added depth, add a splash of brewed coffee or cocoa powder during the cooking process.

Use a hand blender for pureeing if you want to avoid transferring to a blender.

common recipe questions

What type of tomatoes work best for taco sauce?

Ripe, fresh tomatoes are preferred for their sweetness and flavor. Varieties like Roma or Beefsteak are great choices, but any variety can work in a pinch.

Can I use canned tomatoes instead of fresh?

Yes, canned tomatoes can be used. Opt for whole or crushed tomatoes in juice for the best flavor. You may need to adjust the seasoning since they can be more concentrated.

What can I replace sugar with?

You can substitute sugar with honey, agave syrup, or stevia depending on your preference for sweetness.

Is there a way to make this sauce spicier?

You can add more jalapenos, mix in crushed red pepper flakes, or add a dash of hot sauce to increase the heat level.

Can I use fresh herbs instead of dried?

You can substitute fresh herbs, but you'll need to use more. Generally, use three times the amount of fresh herbs as dried.

What can I use instead of Worcestershire sauce?

Soy sauce or a homemade blend of vinegar, sugar, and spices can serve as a substitute for Worcestershire sauce.

How can I store the taco sauce?

Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. It can also be frozen in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months.

How do I know when the sauce is done cooking?

The sauce should be thick and fragrant, with the onions and jalapenos fully softened.

What if I want to make a large batch?

You can easily double or triple the recipe. Just make sure your crock pot is large enough to accommodate the increased volume.

Can I adjust the consistency of the sauce?

You can thin the sauce with a little water or vegetable broth if it's too thick after cooking. Conversely, simmering it longer will thicken the sauce.

Can I add meat to the sauce?

Yes, ground beef, turkey, or shredded chicken can be added. Just cook the meat separately before adding it to the sauce and adjust the cooking time accordingly.

I made half a recipe to test it out. It's wonderful!! I'm going to make it again definitely.

We actually double this recipe each time we make it and freeze it in smaller quantities. It's a great taco sauce and we use it in nearly all our tex mex recipes calling for bottled sauce. It's good on tacos of course but you can also add it to other meat dishes like we mix some into our meatloaf or use it as a sauce on top. Use it with ground beef and pasta to make a mexican type casserole. Possibilities are endless and when you make it up and freeze it in small batches you have really good taco sauce anytime you need it and it didnt' come from a bottle!
