Doughnuts (donuts) come in a variety of forms, from yeast-raised to the popular donut holes. Also, many people include other bakery pastries in their definition of donuts such as bismarcks and jelly rolls.
The most commonly thought of doughnut is the yeast-raised. It puffs up when fried and is often glazed. There are also cake doughnuts, which as their name indicates, have a cake-like texture. Jelly or custard filled doughnuts are like raised donuts but are filled with a thick jelly or custard mixture. And of course, doughnut holes (which are supposed to be the hole removed from the doughnut before frying) that are usually coated in a powdered sugar or cinnamon-sugar mixture.
Donut Day is celebrated the first Friday in June each year.
