Fun Food Holidays™ May 24th is National Escargot Day

Escargot, the French word for "snail", are believed to have been around as food since prehistoric times. Snails are high in protein and low in fat. They are also a good source of Potassium, Vitamin E, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Copper and Selenium.
The most common way we see escargot prepared in the U.S. are as appetizers. The snails are removed from their shells and cooked in butter (usually with lots of garlic). They are then placed back in their shells, or placed in special escargot dishes, and served with the garlic butter and crusty bread for dipping.
Escargot can be purchased fresh from a seafood market, or bought canned from gourmet food stores.
