One of my absolute favorite sweet treats is Rice Krispy treats. Huh, you say? Aren't pastry chefs supposed to love fancy things--cakes with unpronounceable French names, expensive patisserie goods, candies flecked with gold? What gives? Truth be told, most chefs I know are so tired of making swanky complicated food all day that by the time they have time to eat, it's usually going to be something quite simple. I love grilled cheese. I could easily live on bread and cheese alone, but sometimes I feel like kicking it up a notch or two and actually turning on my...

I had an opportunity to visit Washington D.C. recently. It was my first visit ever, so I was overwhelmed by everything: the monuments, the museums, and the traffic. I only had one day in the city, so my friend and I walked all day to try and take in everything. Our only break was in Chinatown...for food, of course! After walking up and down several streets and alleyways, we found the least sketchy-looking establishment and climbed the narrow stairs to the second floor. Inside, the waitress showed us to our seats. "Is it feel hot in here?" she asked us...

Beware, for we are about to enter the carnivorous season. The months ahead promise both the white and the dark turkey, plates piled high with ham, trays of meaty canapes, and perhaps the occasional holiday steak dinner. Normally, the typical American carnivore rejoices at this time of year. We tuck in the bib, place a large napkin on the lap, and break out the expandable pants in anticipation of the annual gorging of protein. So you put on a few pounds, no big deal. That's what New Year's resolutions are for, right? In the meantime, the weather has turned, the...

Ah the sweet smell of fall. Kids are back in school, leaves are beginning to turn, and boyfriends are glued to the TV every Sunday and Monday night. At least it used to be just the boyfriends. Now it's the girlfriends too. Now it's my girlfriends dragging me to the local bar on a Saturday to catch coverage of their college football team on some obscure subscriber-only channel. And its my girlfriends who are canceling brunch plans on me because they scored tickets to the USC game some upcoming Saturday.

Just before school started, my son had a good friend over - they've been friends for about ten years now, and it never fails that, even if it's been awhile since they've spent time together, they have no trouble making up for lost time. This time, that included making a smoothie in our kitchen. Now, not just any smoothie, mind you. Nope, this smoothie was one that contained everything in the kitchen. Yes you read that right: EVERYTHING in the kitchen was in this drink. From cupboards to fridge, there was no stopping this crew. How could I let...

You've probably seen them lately. The glazed eyes, the haunted frown. The crinkled forehead ... the tight shoulders and neck. It's homework overload and it's happening in towns and cities all over the country. Sure, we all had homework as kids. But homework is a different animal today. After spending a whole day in school, kids today are finding it harder than ever to set down their backpacks and run outdoors and play until dinner. That's where a snack or drink can prime the pump.

The heat has finally let-up here in the Grand Republic of Texas, and so life is increasingly more comfortable outdoors. In fact, I'm typing this on my patio as a cool breeze wafts under my nose, birds chirp, and as the faint sound of Rachmaninov's "Litergy of St. John Chrysostom, Opus 31" hums on my overpriced outdoor speaker. I'm not wearing shoes and the cool concrete feels lovely on my hot feet. And speaking of dogs, my companion Jesus stands guard against the calico cat who taunts him daily by alighting on the fence posts.

Fresh-cut fries, apple fritters, funnel cakes. It's definitely feeling like fall here in Lancaster County and I've had the hankering for a delicious deep-fried dish - maybe since it's been fair and farm show season. Surrounded by all those delicious stands, the smell of fries, blossoming onions, cheesesteaks, chicken corn soup and apple dumplings beckons. Yet we all know that consuming a lot of fried food isn't the best for our health. Trans fat, saturated fat . . . have you lost track of which fats and oils you should watch out for? According to the...

Usually the cooler autumn weather stirs up the desire to attend a handful of local fairs or - since we're in farm country - ubiquitous farm shows. And it just so happened that after trying our hand at some carnival games (daughter even won a goldfish), it was time to fill our bellies, so we hit the food stands. In a midway lined with fast food and artery-clogging treats du jour, there was everything from cheese steaks and deep-fried veggies to funnel cakes, egg rolls (a fave) and waffle and ice cream sandwiches. After we had settled on some homemade soup, French...

For many people at this time of year, all thoughts turn to football. Now I am not a big sports fan by any means. In fact, I have often embarrassed myself by mistaking a major league team for a minor league team, or thinking a game was being played on the competitor's turf rather than the home stadium. Out of necessity I have learned just enough to keep up with my husband. He's an avid sports fanatic who can quote statistics going back to his childhood. We are both from the Philadelphia area, a place notorious for not having won any professional sports championship since 1983. It's...

Can you imagine a culinary world without garlic? It's hard to believe, but some food historians say that its widespread use in American cooking goes back no further than the mid 1960s. Historically, garlic has been revered for its many mythical and healing properties. It was buried with the Egyptians in order to assure safe passage to the afterlife, eaten by Greek and Roman soldiers to give them courage and strength, used in World War II as a poultice on soldier's wounds, and garlands of it have graced more than a few necks in the hopes of keeping vampires at bay.

Now that the books are covered, the first tests administered and everyone's getting settled into back-to-school schedules, maybe there's a subject or topic that's getting your kids down. Perhaps it's not clicking. Or the concepts aren't easily flowing. Hey, perhaps it's time for a snack. No, really. A different kind of snack. Not a Haagen-Dazs or salty, fat-filled Fritos short-lasting departure from reality. No, a snack that will help to bring bookwork down-to-earth. One that will claim it back-from-the-books.

Salads are in order at all times of the year. Winter calls for hearty greens mixed with roasted root vegetables. Spring brings baby lettuce tossed with artichokes, peas, and asparagus. Summer is a fool's paradise of tomatoes, corn, zucchini, yellow squash, snap peas, and every leafy vegetable under the hot, high sun. Of all seasons, fall might just be the best time for salads. Particularly early fall when tomatoes are still ripe and hanging low on the vines, corn just doesn't want to go away, pears are coming into their own and apples are perfuming the orchard.

Inspiration. It's what cooks everywhere are constantly in pursuit of. And that's why so many folks love to read cookbooks. And it's no exception at our house. Cookbooks make for some great reading - especially for kids. Sitting and perusing a cookbook with kids is a delightful way to find out what appeals to them ... and what they would just love to learn how to cook (It's guaranteed to be different than what you would choose!). Plus, it's time together that helps to inspire those much-needed everyday mealtime ideas. I recently made it even easier to incorporate...

When you ask many kids what their favorite lunch is, I'm guessing more than a few will tell you the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Now that the busy school year is underway you probably have made a few PB&J's yourself. There are even restaurants in some cities, usually in places with a nearby university, devoted to this school lunch staple. While many favor grape jelly, peanut butter goes so well with almost any type of jelly: strawberry, raspberry, apple, and apricot preserves. It's yummy with chocolate swirled into it or combined with spreads like Nutella too.

For some reason, many members of my family were born in the fall. I guess Valentine's Day was a big deal for many of my relatives! The only complaint I have about the plethora of autumn birthdays is that I have to come up with so many gift ideas in a short amount of time. Birthdays were (and still are) a big deal in my family. When we were kids, my parents threw big birthday bashes for me and my siblings almost every year. I can remember one of my brother's parties. He was turning six; I was seven. The party was at the local bowling alley and featured a cake crowded...
