It's that time of year, time to ditch your diet and buy some Girl Scout cookies! There is a short window of opportunity to order from your friendly local Girl Scout or Brownie going on right now, but for just a few weeks. My husband and I had a long Girl Scout cookie dry spell with no cookie sellers among our family or co-worker's children, so we had to keep our eyes peeled, looking out for a table parked at local businesses each year, if we wanted to get our hands on some of the hard to resist cookies. This year we have plenty of cookie buying opportunities. Now that we...

When I came home with the cookbook Fresh From the Vegetarian Slow Cooker recently, I did what I normally do with cookbooks: I flipped through it the first chance I had. At breakfast, at bedtime, whenever I could fit it in. I usually keep a little pack of sticky notes on the front cover and peel of a little marker each time I run across a recipe that I think I'd like to try in the next couple weeks. This book was arrayed with a whole selection of stickies by the time I was through the 260 pages. From the beginning chapter on Appetizers and Snacks to the middle sections...

It is always fun to impress your guests when you entertain, and one of the simplest ways to do that is with simple syrup. Simply put, simple syrup is sugar dissolved in water boiled into a thick liquid. Taking on any added flavor imaginable, simple syrup is used in teas, cocktails, glazes and even to moisten cakes and icings. Is It Really Simple? Simple syrup could not be easier to make. The ratio is 2-1, sugar to water. Yes, that's right. Two times as much sugar as water is the key to making the final product thick and syrupy. Pour two cups sugar into a

So, how's the challenge going? Have you come up with anything that you'd make again - or not? Any chance you're making a dent in helping to eliminate one-third of the trash (and save some of that $100 billion of annually trashed food) in your part of the world? Using leftovers in tasty ways is something that takes practice - and the more you do it, the easier it gets. It'll get to the point where you actually look for what's left and plan a meal around it. And that's not only good for the earth and your waistline, but better for your wallet too. Years ago...

Hey, kids! For Valentine's Day, forget the candy, how about cooking breakfast for someone you love today - what better way to say I Love You?

by
It's that Valentine's Day time of the year. And what comes to mind? Hearts, red, pink, kisses, hugs, declarations of love, right? Yeah, it seems like the first two weeks of February are filled with all thoughts of what we can do to show our love and affection for each other...

Hey, you! Yeah, I am talking to you. How did I know you would be reading this? Easy. As the boyfriend/husband/fiance to your lovely female counterpart, it is practically part of your DNA to procrastinate. Seeing as how it is almost Valentine's Day, now is approximately the time that you realize that you have absolutely no idea what to do for your better half for the upcoming annual celebration of the deep love that binds you two together. If you think you are going to get a decent dinner reservation at this point, forget it. Ask anyone in...

Aaahh, it's that time of year again: the time for hearts, flowers, and romantic gestures. But if you are a kid, then Valentine's Day is really about two things, candy and cards! Now given that your kids will be getting an overload of candy at school and elsewhere, why not show them your love with some of these healthier, but still enjoyable ideas for Valentine's Day treats. Holiday themed milkshakes and smoothies are so much fun! Try starting the day off right with a healthy pink berry smoothie. Simply mix up a cup of plain yogurt (your choice whether it...

If you are a sucker for sweet treats, then St. Valentine's Day is just your holiday. The day is built around giving our loved ones small tokens of our affection, including lots of sweets like candy conversation hearts, chocolate covered strawberries, and heart shaped cookies and chocolates. Whether you celebrate Valentine's as part of a duo, a group, or solo, it's the perfect time of year to experiment with making some special little confections. It's really fun to take some of your favorite desserts and recreate them in beautiful bite-sized portions, otherwise known as...

As mother to two somewhat particular eaters, I am constantly encouraging them to eat more variety to make sure we get all the nutrients we need in our diets. But I am a creature of habit myself, so I often find myself buying the same staple items each week at the store, and cooking a lot of the same family favorite menu items. It makes the whole process a lot faster and easier since we all know what to expect. But this week I decided to give our usual spaghetti, roast chicken, broiled fish and pizza lineup a little shakeup. Instead of sticking with our all American...

There is one food that most often comes to mind when you think of romantic possibilities, and that is the oyster. With their reputed special romantic powers, they are the perfect food for this love-laden time of year. Oysters play a part in my love story, but not in the way one would think! On a long weekend trip to New Orleans, it became clear that my (future) husband and I made a great match. He embraced my carefully planned foodie itinerary with more gusto than I would have imagined and was game for traveling across the city and out of our way to sample all the...

I recently was handed down a dense and somewhat ancient book on the cooking of Tuscany. A lovely but largely unusable book, the recipes and accompanying pictures outlined feasts for every occasion. But even the simplest menu for a family dinner went far beyond the scope of American families' most elaborate holiday meals. Such was the complexity of the menus that many offered accompanying children's menus, perhaps recognizing that anchovy tarts and stuffed sardines are most likely not the thing to strike a child's fancy. It was one of these children's meals that sent me on...

Though commonly associated with romantic love, Valentine's Day is the perfect holiday opportunity to extend your warm thoughts and appreciation to all those people that you care about. Although some might consider it merely a "Hallmark holiday" to be filled with frilly cards, jewelry, and flowers, there are many unique ways to celebrate this special day. Chocolate is the ultimate symbol of Valentine's Day and at the risk of suggesting something that is clichéd, I think everyone's Valentine could use a little more chocolate. Last Valentine's Day I had a whole game plan. As...

In the world of under-appreciated vegetables, the lowly cauliflower must be somewhere near the top of the list (or would it be 'the bottom?'). In all honesty, its poor ranking can hardly be avoided. No doubt years of re-heated frozen vegetable medleys and over-boiled versions of the fresh variety left many adults with memories of the vegetable that are as bland as the cauliflower itself. But I can only hope that these empty childhood memories have not left people scarred for life. For there is hope for this dear flower yet. There is something truly intriguing about...

Remember when you fell in love? And sometime after that there was a ring. After the ring came a bridal shower... and the three identical wooden salad bowls. After that came the wedding... and the bread machine that now gathers dust in the back of the cupboard. Now maybe five, ten years, even decades later, you have a kitchen full of things, things that can trace the progression of your relationship from first romance to life-long partners. And yet with all those memories attached to the things that fill the kitchen, all you use are the everyday dishes and the same old pots and...

Lately at the market, I can't help but notice there are more and more labels on the front and sides of the food packages in addition to the regular nutrition facts. I just bought some Japanese style Panko breadcrumbs that have the initials "LS" and "LF" on them and it got me thinking. Usually, when I see an L beginning to an acronym, it is one of those endless variations on LOL (laughing out loud) that you see tossed around on e-mails and Facebook. I'll probably never learn the latest and greatest of those terms, but when it comes to food labels, it seems a little...
