Tongue In PEEP

The signs of spring are all around us. Robins are nesting in the trees, tulips and daffodils are blooming in the garden, and those adorable, tiny, bright yellow marshmallow chicks are sitting on the grocery store shelves. Ah… the PEEPS are back!

What would the first holiday of springtime be without those sugar-coated gooey little creatures?

In discussions with my friends, I have found that no one holds a neutral opinion about the marshmallow candy that is my must have for every Easter basket I fill. You either love them or you don’t. I sit on the “love them” side of the fence. What’s not to love? They are as cute as cute can be, low in calories and carbohydrates (each chick has a mere 32 calories and 8 carbohydrates), fat free, cholesterol free, and low in sodium. You can even get sugar-free PEEP chicks sweetened with Splenda. Each sugar-free chick has 20 calories and 7.67 carbohydrates. In case you’re wondering, I’ve tried them and thought that the sugar-free PEEPS were just as tasty as the full sugar ones.

It just would not be Easter without these petite, sweet, melt in your mouth treats. And it appears that a lot of people agree with me. Just Born, the company that produces PEEPS, makes over 1.2 billion PEEPS a year. More than 700 million of them are consumed at Easter where, year after year, they are the top selling non-chocolate Easter candy—even outselling jelly beans! Despite the availability of various colors and forms, the classic yellow chick remains the most popular among devoted PEEPS fans.

As with most holiday food items, there are bound to be leftovers. Recipes are abundant for your leftover Easter ham but when it comes to leftover PEEPS, you may not have as many options on recipe websites. Not to worry. PEEPS, like fine wine and cheese, only get better with age! Given time, the PEEP’s exterior will begin to harden a bit creating the perfect texture for dunking into your afternoon cappuccino.

But if you want to enjoy your leftover PEEPS while they are still soft, try my S’PEEPS recipe. You will never go back to that plain old marshmallow S’more again.
