ingredients

2 (9-inch size) pie crust dough
2 cans (21 ounce size) cherry pie filling
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon water

directions

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

Place one of the pie crusts in a pie pan. Pour the cherry pie filling evenly in the crust.

Cut out designs from the remaining pie crust (hearts, xmas shapes, etc. depending on the holiday) and decorate the top of the pie with the shapes. Flute the edges of the crust.

Whisk together the egg and water. Brush the decorations and crust edges with the egg wash.

Place the cherry pie in the oven and bake at 425 degrees F for 40 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and shiny.

Remove the pie from the oven. Let the pie cool for 10 minutes on a wire rack if serving warm. If serving cold, let the pie cool completely then cover with plastic wrap or foil and place in the refrigerator until chilled.

Store leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator.

recipe tips

Roll out the pie crust dough evenly to prevent uneven baking.

Be creative with the cut-out designs for a festive look.

Brush the egg wash gently to avoid tearing the crust.

Bake the pie in the lower third of the oven for even cooking.

Allow the pie to cool slightly before slicing to let the filling set.

Adjust the baking time if using a different type of pie crust or filling.

Serve the pie warm or chilled.

tools needed

Pie Pan: For baking the cherry pie and creating a flaky crust to hold all that cherry goodness.

Rolling Pin: For rolling out the pie dough to fit the pie pan.

Pastry Brush: To evenly distribute the egg wash on the pie crust for a shiny and golden finish.

Wire Rack: For cooling the cherry pie after baking, allowing air to circulate around the pie and preventing the bottom crust from getting soggy.

what goes with it?

Vanilla Bean Ice Cream: scoop a generous serving of creamy vanilla bean ice cream next to a warm slice of cherry pie for a classic dessert combo. The cool, smooth ice cream perfectly complements the warm, fruity pie filling.

Whipped Cream: top your slice of cherry pie with a fluffy mound of homemade whipped cream. The light, airy texture of the whipped cream adds a creamy element that contrasts deliciously with the sweet, juicy cherries.

Dark Chocolate Shavings: sprinkle dark chocolate shavings over your slice of cherry pie for a sophisticated twist on a classic dessert. The rich, slightly bitter chocolate balances out the sweetness of the pie filling.

Almond Slices: garnish your cherry pie with a sprinkling of toasted almond slices for a nutty crunch that takes this simple dessert to the next level.

Hot Coffee: pair a slice of cherry pie with a piping hot cup of coffee. The bold, bitter notes of the coffee complement the sweet, tart flavors of the pie.

  1. Valerie REVIEW:

We actually made this for Christmas 2012, but I'm just getting around to the review now. The recipe was probably one of the easiest desserts I've ever made. With pre-made pie crust and canned pie filling it's hard to mess it up. You'll notice from my photo that I did dress it up a bit with some decorative pie crust cut-outs. Served it with fresh whipped cream.
