ingredients
1 package refrigerated double-crust pie crust
Filling
1 fresh orange, zest of
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon grated nutmeg, scant
1 1/2 pound cooking apples (Winesap, Rome, etc.), peeled, cored and thinly sliced
1/2 fresh lemon, juiced
1/2 cup Thompson seedless grapes (sultanas) or small sweet seedless white grapes
1 fresh orange, juice of
milk, to glaze
sugar, for sprinkling
ice cream (optional)
directions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Prepare pie crust according to package directions for a double crust pie. Line a pie dish, if needed.
Prepare apples and sprinkle with lemon juice. Toss.
Sprinkle orange zest in pie crust. Combine sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg.
Layer apples, grapes (sultanas) and brown sugar in pie shell. Sprinkle with sugar and spices. Pour in orange juice.
Top with pie crust, pressing edges firmly together and scalloping if desired. Make a cross-slit in center of pie to allow air and juices to escape. Brush top with milk (to glaze), then bake 30 minutes until golden brown.
Sprinkle top with sugar and serve warm. Accompany with ice cream if desired.
