Nutrition Facts
by Guest Writer, Valerie Whitmore
I've long resisted adding nutrition information to the recipes on CDKitchen. Why? Because my experience with the data (on other websites, in cookbooks, etc) has been that it can vary from mildly accurate to way off base. Depending on the USDA database referenced and actual ingredients used in the recipe the "real" nutrition values can vary greatly from reality.
For example, say a recipe calls for 1 (15 ounce) can of black beans. Next time you are at the store check out the different brands of black beans. Read their labels. You'll see that something so simple as canned black beans can have a variation in calories, carbs and fiber. So depending which brand you buy, the actual nutrition data will most likely be different from the data listed with the recipe. And sure, we may only be talking about 10 calories here or 2 grams of fiber there but it still calls into question the validity of the data.
But, year after year we get requests for this data to be added to the recipes. So, you will start to see it appear on select recipes while we're in "beta" mode. We're going a step beyond what most other recipes add to the data as well. In addition to the usual calories, fat, and carbs you'll also find a full list of vitamins, diabetic exchanges and even Weight Watcher's points. While we do review the overall nutrition output for each recipe please let us know if you find any glaring errors or inaccuracies.
