National Eggs Benedict Day

by Guest Writer, Valerie Whitmore

Yesterday I wrote about growing my own alfalfa sprouts for a recipe. Now you will probably think I was crazy to even bother with it since the amount of sprouts I needed was basically for a garnish. That's right, that "gardening" project was taken on simply to adorn the recipe we're featuring today to celebrate National Eggs Benedict Day.

You can read about the history of this tasty breakfast dish with our collection of Eggs Benedict recipes. It's an interesting example of how listening to your customers can bring about great changes to your business. Of course, like many things, there are other versions of how this dish got its name - attributing it to everything from Pope Benedict XIII's love for eggs to a Wall Street broker named Benedict looking for hangover food. Feel free to believe whichever version you prefer.

The classic version of Eggs Benedict is an English muffin with ham or Canadian bacon on top, covered with a poached egg, and the entire thing is drizzled with Hollandaise sauce. And, just like there are many versions as to the origin of the dish, many versions of the recipe have developed over the years. On CDKitchen, along with the traditional recipe, we also have 45 different versions - from Southwest-Style Eggs Benedict With Jalapeno Hollandaise to Eggs Neptune With Orange Hollandaise.

Most of the recipes don't take very long to make so they can even be whipped up for breakfast on a work/school day. The eggs poach while you're toasting the muffins, and the Hollandaise sauce is ready in mere minutes with just egg yolks, lemon juice, and butter.

The recipe we tested for this tasty holiday was called "Garden Benedict".  Toasted English muffins, topped with a slice of ripe tomato, poached egg, avocado slices, Hollandaise sauce, and... a garnish of alfalfa sprouts.

It was positively delicious!

Even though today is officially the holiday, feel free to celebrate with Eggs Benedict any time of the year.
