Happy 18th Birthday CDKitchen!
by Guest Writer, Valerie Whitmore
Back in 1995 I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this website. It was an experiment more than anything. I wanted to learn HTML and had free web space at the university I was working at. Who knew?
So, here we are 18 years later.
Every day has been a challenge, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I've learned so much over the years, and knowledge is never a bad thing.
The original site, for those of you who don't remember the story, was called The ChiliDog's Fantastic Food Page (and Dalmatian information) . Yeah. I'll give you a minute to stop laughing. Heck, it still cracks me up.
After a while it was clear that the food portion of the website was far more interesting so the site changed to The ChiliDog's Kitchen. And in 1998 when I finally decided to cough up the fees for our own domain name < insert broke college student excuse here >, we shortened it further to CDKitchen.
And who was The ChiliDog? Well, that was our first Dalmatian, Chili. When I first started hanging out in USENET newsgroups I used the moniker "ChiliDog" instead of my own name. It seemed weird to be putting personal information on this strange thing called The Internet so I used my dog's name. I was an active participant in many online cooking newsgroups so people began to know me by that name so it seemed logical to carry it over to the website. In retrospect, I clearly could have come up with a better name given our early entry onto the web, but at least this way Chili is never forgotten.
The site has (obviously) changed a lot since then. But I can honestly say that I still love working on it just as much, if not more.
Happy Birthday, CDKitchen! And may we have many more wonderful birthdays together!
