Foodie Friday: The Hungry Couple

by Guest Writer, Valerie Whitmore

I've never been keen on infused vodkas or other flavored alcohol. They usually taste pretty fake. And I loathe sweet, syrupy drinks in general so they are usually off my radar. However, I had heard good things about the whipped cream vodka by Pinnacle so I gave in and bought it

O.M.G. I love this stuff. It's sweet without being cloying. It's got just enough flavor that it will enhance a drink, not overpower it. But after a couple of experiments I wasn't sure what else to do with it

I found this blog when looking for what to mix with this bottle of vodka delicioso. They had a recipe for a Lemon Meringue Martini using whipped cream vodka. Ok, I dig tart drinks and with the inclusion of the sweetened vodka... well, I just had to try this.

Let me back up for a minute. The Hungry Couple blog is about living life in balance - with good food, not junk food (paraphrased from their own "about us" statement). And, they prominently feature their dog, Hadley, on the site. I mean, how could I not feel kismet with their blog since CDK is named after our first dog. They have some really creative sounding recipes like baked pumpkin french toast sticks, healthy asparagus spiral puffs,  and sweet potato dog biscuits.

But back to the booze.

If tart, lemonade-y drinks aren't for you then you should check out their site for their other drinks. They have a whole category dedicated to cocktails. I see many happy hours in your future.

However, I do love tart, lemonade-y drinks so...

The drink itself is pretty simple, and I think that's one of the things I like about it. No blenders or drink-mixers-that-you'll-never-use-again needed. It's the yummy vodka, lemon juice, simple syrup, and cream. Oh, and a whipped cream garnish.

Get the exact proportions here.

Since we were doing tastings I put the drink in miniature martini glasses but the basic recipe makes one good martini

I added a garnish of lemon peel.

I really enjoyed this drink. Even Brent, who doesn't like tart drinks, thought this was good. If you're unsure about the tartness, go easy on the lemon juice at first until you taste it. You can always add more simple syrup to balance it out. Or use really sweet whipped cream. (that was actually Brent's suggestion).

The best part about this drink is that it's good any time of the year. It's festive looking so you can serve it at the holidays, or save it for a summertime cocktail
