La Dolce Vita

CDKitchen Cooking Columnist Sara Rae Gore
About author / Sara Rae Gore

Our New York dish; actress; chef; cooking instructor. Glam food is her thing and she makes a mean martini.

Aahh, la dolce vita! If only we could all enjoy the sweet life. Well, who says we can't? The sweet life is there if we seek it.  Grab it. Steal it. Drink it. Eat it. Love it!

Let's break it down a bit. The word "sweet" describes different things in different contexts. Sweet could be in reference to our basic sense of taste (sweet, sour, bitter, salty).  For instance, "The kumquats are uncharacteristically sweet this season" or, "Man, that apple martini is way too sweet!" Sweet could also be used to describe a person's temperament.   Take my mother, for example. Just the other day, against her better judgment, she let me borrow her favorite necklace, knowing she might not get it back. You see, we have an unspoken understanding. Oh that woman. She's so sweet. That's not just an example. That is the truth.

Sweet could also be used to describe a very "awesome" deal. For example, "You scored your grandmother's Pre-War rent controlled three bedroom apartment for $800 a month? Sweet!" In this sense "sweet" describes a charmed way of life as you would define it.  So even though I don't have the uber-millions required to live in a building overlooking Central Park, I still can enjoy the sweet life.

So what am I getting at with all this sweet life garbage? Each week in this virtual space, I will be giving you the inside scoop on the sweet life that you too can explore.  I am inviting you to experience city life with me--its diverse and ample outlets for fun, excitement, and serious gluttony.  Being the food and culture junkie that I am, I open up my arms, my heart, and my laptop to share these gifts that the city of New York has presented us with.  Throughout this urban epicurean exploration, I plan to honor those who have brought us the tasty treats, cultural specialties, culinary breakthroughs, and innovative twists on old classics that make this city the food capital that it is.

You don't have to be a Rockefeller to enjoy the best of the city. You just have to know where to go.  And that's right here.  Stay tuned weekly and let's dish!
