A little taste of nostalgia. These copycat Bit-O-Honey candies are easy to make and will satisfy that sweet craving (and give your dentist job security).

serves/makes:

ready in:
  under 30 minutes

ingredients

1 cup honey
1 cup crunchy peanut butter
2 cups dry powdered milk

directions

Combine the honey and peanut in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat on medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until melted and creamy.

Add the dry powdered milk to the mixture and mix until it forms a dough. Knead until smooth.

Roll out the candy on waxed paper. Cut into strips, and then into 1-inch pieces. Roll to form little pillows (grease your hands if needed).

Wrap the candy in small pieces of waxed paper and twist the ends to secure. Store at room temperature.

recipe tips

Use natural peanut butter without added sugars for a healthier option.

If you want a more decadent treat, dip the finished candies in melted chocolate and let them set before wrapping in waxed paper.

For a variation, add different extracts such as vanilla or almond to the honey-peanut butter mixture.

If the candy becomes too hard after storage, you can microwave it for a few seconds to soften it.

Experiment with different nut butters, like almond or cashew, for a unique twist on the flavor.

Make sure the honey and peanut butter are well combined before adding the powdered milk to create a uniform mixture.

Adjust the amount of powdered milk as needed; more milk will make the candy firmer.

To make rolling easier, dust the surface with powdered milk before rolling out the candy.

common recipe questions

Can I use creamy peanut butter instead of chunky?

Yes, creamy peanut butter can be used instead of chunky if you prefer a smoother texture, but it will alter the final texture of the candy by removing the crunchy elements.

What is the purpose of powdered milk in this recipe?

Powdered milk acts as a binding agent, giving the candy its structure and chewy texture.

Can I substitute the dry powdered milk with another ingredient?

If you're looking for a dairy-free option, you can use coconut milk powder or almond milk powder as a substitute, but this may slightly change the flavor and texture.

How do I store Bit-O-Honey Candy?

Store the candy in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, where it can last for about 2 weeks.

Can this candy be frozen?

You can freeze Bit-O-Honey Candy. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or store it in a freezer-safe container, and it can last for up to 3 months in the freezer.

How do I make the candy softer or harder?

To make the candy softer, reduce the quantity of dry powdered milk slightly, and to make it harder, increase the amount of powdered milk.

What if my mixture is too sticky to roll out?

If the mixture is too sticky, you can add a little more powdered milk to help firm it up. Alternatively, you can lightly grease your hands and work surface or dust with powdered sugar to prevent sticking.

Can I add other ingredients such as chocolate or nuts?

You can mix in ingredients like chocolate chips or chopped nuts, but be sure to adjust the quantity of powdered milk accordingly to maintain the right consistency.

How can I tell when the honey and peanut butter mixture is properly melted?

The mixture is ready when it's fully combined and smooth. It should gently bubble but not boil, as overheating can alter the texture.

What's the best way to cut the candy into strips?

Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter works best for cutting the rolled-out candy into strips. To prevent sticking, you can lightly dust the blade with powdered sugar before cutting.

tools needed

Microwave: For melting the honey and peanut butter together. If you don't have a microwave you can melt the mixture in the top of a double boiler over simmering, not boiling, water.

Measuring Cups: To measure the honey, peanut butter, and dry milk powder.

Mixing Bowl: A large, microwave-safe bowl for combining the honey and peanut butter while it melts in the microwave and then for mixing with the dry powdered milk.

Wax Paper: For rolling out the candy and for storing the finished product.

Rolling Pin: Used to roll out the candy mixture into the desired thickness before cutting it into strips.

Sharp Knife or Pizza Cutter: To cut the rolled candy into strips and then into pillow-sized pieces.

what goes with it?

Peanut Butter Cookies: Combine minced Bit-O-Honey candy into your peanut butter cookie dough for an extra layer of flavor and texture.

Ice Cream Topping: Chop the Bit-O-Honey candy into small pieces and use it as a topping for vanilla or chocolate ice cream.

Granola Bars: Incorporate chopped Bit-O-Honey into homemade granola bars for added sweetness and chewiness.

Trail Mix: Chop Bit-O-Honey into small bits and mix them with nuts, seeds, and dried fruits for a sweet trail mix.

Pancake Add-In: Chop the candy and stir it into the batter for pancakes or crepes. The warm pancakes will slightly melt the candy.

Cheesecake Swirl: Incorporate pieces of Bit-O-Honey into cheesecake batter. The honey flavor will enhance the rich creaminess of the cheesecake and add texture contrast.

The instructions didn't seem complete. Couldn't knead it because it is to hot from the microwave and it never seemed to set up. It just tasted like peanut butter.
