Old Fashioned German Sweet Cake Recipe

Ingredients:
1 package (4 oz. size) German sweet chocolate
1/2 cup boiling water
1 cup butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
4 egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/4 cups sifted all purpose flour
OR
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
4 egg whites, stiffly beaten
Directions:
Melt chocolate in boiling water. Cool.
Cream butter and sugar till fluffy. Add yolks, one at a time, beating well after each. Blend in vanilla and chocolate.
Sift flour, soda and salt adding alternately with buttermilk to the chocolate, beating after each addition until smooth. Fold in egg whites.
Pour into three 9" layer pans, lined at bottom with wax paper. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-35 minutes. Cool and frost tops only.
